apartment reviews in kihei
Hi !
We are currently living in Waikiki and are planning to move to Kihei, Maui.
Can anyone give us a review on best/worse condo's in south Kihei ?
We have considered moving to Kihei Shores? anyone know about this place ? Is it noisy as in Waikiki ? Crime/safety ? Does the vog affect this area ? Which side of Maui gets the most vog ?
What about pest problems there ? roaches ? etc ???
any help is greatly appreciated !
Mahalo !
ps plan on moving in next 2 weeks !!!

Well, the problem with Kihei is the crime,,,,,absolutlely horrific, folks here now have to chain their cars to telephone poles in order to avoid having them stolen, sometimes, when they go to check on their car in the morning, not only is the car gone, BUT THE TELEPHONE POLE AS WELL!!!!!!!!!, The telephone pole, being made of aluminum, and stuffed with copper wiring, is easy prey for those midnight vandals!!! And the bugs, especially cockroaches, just forget it!!!!!! Saw a gecko on my lanai the other night, surrounded by some ten cockroaches, poor gecko was obvoiusly fearing for his, or her, how do you tell anyways???, life!!!!!! Had to rescue the little mo'o. Traffic, absolutely insane!!!!!! Took me about a half hour just to get down to Kihei Road the other day, well, I was waiting for a jump start, battery was pau. And, I won't even go into the rampant cannabisim, that has been mentioned far too often, but, stay away from Kihei!!!!!!!!!! That almost rhymes, doesn't it?????
In all seriousness, what little I have, Kihei Shores should do you well, I'm at the Kihei Alii Kai, great pool, tennis courts, some covered parking, nice spot, just above Kamaole 1 and 2........Best of luck
Aloha

Kihei Shores used to be a problem spot - lots of drugs and people hanging out. It's gotten a lot better. It isn't a posh place, but perhaps a place for you to figure out where you want to be and what you can afford. The pool is small.
Nowhere on Maui is as noisy as Waikiki, and I'd feel safer at Kihei Shores. Vog drifts over Maui once in a while, but not for a some time now.
Pests - going to depend on the unit and building you are in. Everywhere on Hawaii has roaches, but not actively wandering about in your food stores if you are clean.
Kihei Shores is on the South end of Kihei.

Now wait a second Calico, I haven't seen a cockroach in my place in ages,,,,,,,,Jeez, what the heck is that crawling on my foot!!!!!!!! I take that back.
And in Kihei, if you're working locally, say Wailea or something closeby, don't even bother to buy a car, the new bus system is working out rather well, and a nice bicycle gets excellent fuel milage. I'm driving a fairly fast sports car on Kihei road the other day, was passed on the right, by the same kid, twice...he's on a skateboard!!!!!!

I consider cockroaches to be like flies - just another creature to be discouraged from being in my house, but definitely a part of the environment here. I'd freak out if they were everywhere, but if I spot just one I'll grab the spray or slipper and kill it without breaking conversation.
Biggest kitchen learning curve for newbies is to put food away in the refrigerator or jars. I used to be able to leave all kinds of food out on the counter in CA - bread, half a banana, snacks. Now it all goes in containers or the refrigerator, because if a bug doesn't get to it, it will spoil.
Anywhere you have multiple families living, like apartments or condos, you have less control over structural cleanliness. You can have a spotless kitchen, but your adjacent neighbor could be a slob, or a vacationer who doesn't care about the long term impact. One wall or even a whole building length is not a long commute for a cockroach.

Thanks to all for your comments ( and humor ! ) I look forward to coming there soon. Perhaps you can recommend an affordable hotel to stay for 1 week while I check out the apt. situation ??

We have always rented a condo at Ekahi. Only heard of one incident of burglary there.

The Kihei Kai Nani isn't bad. Check with these people at meetmeonmaui.com . Around $100 a night condo, everything you need and convienient location. I have stayed there many times and would recommend it to anyone on a budget.
