Furniture
Hello all and thank you in advance for all the great info on here, however I have searched all the posts and it seems as though everyone says to bring as little as possible that it will make our move easier. My problem is that I dont see any good furniture stores on Oahu or at least what I would consider reasonably priced. Am I missing something or would it make more sense to bring the couch and chair. If anyone could give me ideas on stores and prices for sofa's and such there I would appreciate it. And no Im not military so BX is not an option for me. Thanks again!

I've posted something similar to this before. Bring a good pair of rubbah slippahs, a few pair of opihi pickers, AKA board shorts, some Aloha shirts, don't forget the Aloha as well, and a sweater, (you'll soon forget where it is!). You can get furniture at any garage sale, there's a store here on Maui that sells used furniture, most of it is from resorts and hotels that have upgraded or remodeled. It really doesn't make much sense to rent a container and ship stuff over here, way expensive..
Aloha

The hotels also sell their stuff about every three to five years. There always seems to be one renovating and selling off their furniture.
What constitutes "good" furniture? Beach sand gets into houses, furniture gets out onto the lanai. "Good" furniture can take a beating on occasion. A lot of folks like old furniture so you can be comfortable and not worry about messing up the furniture.

We set up our house in Kailua (3br 2ba) in 1990 using almost all furniture bought from stores specializing in used Hotel Furniture. We found some beautiful pieces, at great prices. At the time, there was a new law requiring hotels to install sprinklers, and hotels were gutting, floor by floor, selling off the old furniture and buying new as they finished the sprinkler installation on each floor.
That crunch is over, but there are still a couple of stores on Oahu that specialize in used hotel furniture, because hotels are always renovating.
My Oahu yellow pages here in San Diego are pretty old (2002), but they say:
Inter Island Hotel Furniture Sales
2295 N King St
808 845 4444
My wife (and shopper) says she's not sure that's still there, but she thinks there's one on Dillingham, with the same name.
Also, Ross in Kalihi.

Mattress/Kauai?
We have been looking to upgrade our mattress, maybe get a tempurpedic. Found one place down off Haoa St., near the airport (on the way to Time Warner), wandered in, they have them. But I'd like to shop around, get the best deal (tempurpedics are SO expensive!). So, any advice on where to get a mattress on Kauai?

I'd appreciate the name and info on the store. Aloha, Jim

The house we are renting is full of rather nice hotel furniture and pictures. I even found "Hilton Waikoloa" stickers on some of the pieces in hidden spots. It is usually heavy duty stuff.
