Island Hoping
If you are on one island and need to go to another just for business
how do you get around? They use to have a boat transporter I don't
know if it still runs. And fare for airplanes to just go like Hawaii to
Oahu. Any infor would be appreciated.
Thanks

At the moment, there is a ferry between Oahu and Maui. They are hoping to expand the ferry service to a couple of other islands, we will see if this ferry survives any longer than the other ones did.
To check inter-island air fares, check Hawaiian Air, Go (Mesa) Airlines, Mokulele and Pacific Wings. Aloha Airlines folded last spring and the airfares doubled after that happened. We also lost 80% of our air cargo and the U.S. Mail didn't even go for several days.

You can fly from any island to any other island on Island Air, Go!, and several other small airlines. (Or even on Hawaiian and major airlines in some cases.) From Honolulu, you can fly direct to almost any airport on any island and back.
Trickier if you are on a neighbor isle -- many flights go through Honolulu, so you may end up backtracking. Or flying from a more distant airport rather than one near your home.
The SuperFerry also runs (right now) between Oahu and Maui. Service to Kona (on the Big Island) is scheduled to start next year, I think. There are small ferries from Lahaina (on Maui) to Lanai and Molokai.
Once you get to your destination, you pretty much have to rent a car, take a taxi, or figure out public transportation.

Flights were REALLY cheap last year and have sky rocketed since. I was going to go to Honolulu this week from Kauai but the cheapest ticket was around $185- last year it was normal to get flights for under $100!

Curious...
How long is the ferry ride from Oahu to Maui? Is it a ferry large enough to accomodate small sedans or is it just a pedestrian-type ferry? What is the approximate cost for a round-trip ferry ride? I'm sure I'll want to check out the flora and fauna on other islands once I get there.
On another note, do any of you fine folks know if there is a website or number I can call to mail order a Hawaii state map or street guide, similar to the mainland states' maps that outline just cities, parks and roads? Is there such a thing? I'd love to have a more pragmatic map rather than a tourist map before and after arrival. Thanks!

The SuperFerry trip is about 3 hours each way. It's a car (and truck!) ferry, so you can take your vehicle. The fares are, I think, $59/person + $65/car (plus some taxes and fees, as always in Hawaii). The link for the schedules and reservations is here: Hawaii Superferry - Interisland Ferry Travel to Oahu & Maui
I had a hard time finding a detailed map of Maui (especially street-level) when we moved here. I was used to the excellent books of other states on the mainland. We've since found a couple of favorites, although none is perfect. Here's a link to a page that has a pretty good assortment, and shows a sample of the kind of detail/illustration that each map has. Link: http://www.mindbird.com/hawaii_maps.htm (This didn't look like the most retail-friendly site in the world, but it does show the illustration styles. You might want to note the publishing info, and search for the maps at B&N or another book site.)
Let me know if you need something specific, and I'll try to find it. Good luck!

It carries cars, and takes about three hours. I saw an ad for $59 (passenger, no car), but prices vary.
