Default Outdoor Ice Rink in Wahiawa

I am working on a biography of a friend of mine who was stationed in Hawaii during WWII. He told me about skating at an outdoor ice arena in Wahiawa with his GI friends. I am trying to find information about the facility. Photos would be great. Film would be even better.

Help.

Never heard of one there but there is an indoor one in Pearl.

Just checked with my mom, born and raised there and she never heard of one either.

Default Here it is:

Arctic Ice Skating Rink, 1115 California Ave., Wahiawa.

Someone from the Hawaii Historical Society found this. Anyone have access to photos, information?

I grew up in Wahiawa and never heard of an ice rink. I thought the first one was the one they opened near Pearl Harbor.

What are you sure? As far as I know the only Ice arena we have is ICE PALACE, that is indoors. I am not aware of any outdoor Ice arena on Oahu besides the Ice would melt. Perhaps it was a special event that was held for the GI during WW11 who had not seen snow in a while and they use a Ice machine to set up a temporally out door arena. It would be very difficult to maintain a outdoor Ice arena in Hawaii due to the warm and humid climate.

My father was stationed at Schofield Barracks in 1945-46, and I remember him telling me about working part-time as a maintainance man at an ice rink & ice house. He descibed it as roofed with no walls. I can't be sure of the location though, since he lived much of the time at the Ala Wai on his C.O.'s yacht as caretaker.

The Ice skating rink was near where Dot's Restuant now sits. I believe it was owned by the Rodby family which also were principals in Primo Beer Distribution and owners of the former Keemoo (sp) Farm Restuant overlooking Lake Wilson and just across from Schofield Brks. Your friend probably can get photos from Tanji Studios in Wahiawa. Aloha
