The Big Island generally has the reputation for being less expensive. It also has fewer job opportunities, which doesn't sound like an issue for you. And it's "less expensive" relative to the other islands, for which the cost-of-living is very high compared to most of the mainland.

The Big Island has lower rents and real estate prices, but rural, with more driving distance, some bad roads and lack of some or all utilities.

They are two totally different living environments so of course they have two different expense accounts. Hawaii is very rural and mostly known for what it doesn't have - things such as trash service, water service, paved roads, electric service, extensive shopping, entertainment, etc. But it isn't as expensive as Maui, either. We do have more rain and more vog, more space and more cows, too. We have good cowboys, too, although the ones on Maui aren't too bad either.

Other than looking at the cost of living, how do you live? Each island is different and for the island of Hawaii each side is different. If you want nice sandy beaches, then Maui. If you want slow living, then Hawaii (the island). If you want star gazing then Hawaii. If you want night life, then Maui. Fancy shopping and nightlife, then Oahu.

THIS Maui? The one I live on? Where almost everything (thankfully) closes at 9PM?

I hear (admittedly younger) people on the beach all the time say they are "going back to Honolulu because it's so dead here." (And they often include a few expletives for emphasis.)

IMHO, Honolulu is the night life destination.

Well, we roll up our sidewalks at 6:00 pm in many places on this island so staying up until 9:00 is "night life" isn't it? Honolulu is the night life as well as the younger people place. Some of my younger relatives don't even visit this island when they come to this state since my island is too boring for them.

Actually as far as cost of living is going these days, I think Ka'u is now getting really inexpensive what with the vog all over the place. Of course, it is hard to breathe, but the prices are really low until Pele settles down.
