Hi, hope someone can help!

I have moved over from Ireland to Oahu for a year. I have a UK driving license, I read that the state of Hawaii will allow me to drive for a year on my UK license. Im am hoping to buy a truck very soon and I was on the phone to Geico checking out insurance prices. They told me they will insure me under my UK license for 30days, and I must apply for a Hawaii driving License through the DMV. Can someone advise me on this? Is this simply filling out some paper work? Or do I have to do any kind of a test? and what is the fee for all of this??

All response will be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

I suspect you'll at least have to do the written test, because even to switch from another US state to HI license you have to do that.

I think DOT is the acronym for Dept. of Transportation, so google Hawaii DOT and you can probably find their website.

I think you have to take the written test, probably not the skills test which is primarily for new drivers. It's nothing like the grueling one in the UK, though. You just study the book and take a multiple choice test -- about 30 minutes. Here's the web site for Honolulu: Driver License Information, Official Web Site for The City and County of Honolulu The books are available at bookstores, drug stores, etc.

Good luck.
