EMT-B looking into moving to Honolulu or Hilo
Hey all. I'm an EMT-B with a couple years of 911 experience from California. I am currently visiting Hawaii and will be here for a total of a month. I loved Honolulu but my sister lives in Hilo. So it's a toss up between the two. Most likely leaning towards Hilo. Suffice to say securing a job is the deciding factor if I move or not. I am also a nursing student, if it matters. I understand that Hawaii EMT-Basics are like Intermediates. And that they pretty much don't honor EMT-B certs from the mainland. Although It seems like if I have my NR it's possible? I used to have my NR but went to California state certification. However, I can most likely get my NR again if needed. I know that AMR operates on all the islands and that the FD is involved with EMS on the Big Island and Hilo. I know Honolulu EMS runs the EMS there.
But if I can't work on an ambulance. I was wondering if it was possible for me to get a job in a hospital as a tech? Here in California most hospitals don't require their ER techs and such to have experience. But being an EMT-B seems to be required. That being said. What are the major hospitals in the Hilo area? And are there any other jobs I can secure as an EMT-B if the ambulance doesn't work out? I've also read briefly about the programs were you are paid to take the course. Does this only apply to Paramedics?
Thanks in advance!

I don't think Hilo has any hospitals anymore since the Hilo Hospital got downgraded to a medical facility. There are quite a few doctor's offices and clinics around, though. Try ask your sister which ones are nearest to her and send over resumes (using your sister's address as the return address) to the local medical facilites. Tell them you are moving to Hilo to be near your family and the dates you can be there for an interview. Moving to be near family is a valid reason to move to Hawaii and employers would expect you to stick around so they would probably hire you. Does your sister know any medical folks? Have her ask them.

I have done some specific searches here but a lot of the info was mixed or maybe for another Island.

Oh? What are the most major hospitals within 30 minutes or so of downtown Hilo? Pretty much within reason to commute. I've also thought about Doctor's offices and such. Maybe a surgery center? Since I'm sure there are tech jobs that don't require anything like CNA and such.
Thanks!

Uh, find a map and locate Hilo on it. That's the population center. When folks say "downtown" Hilo they mean the old part of town along the bay front - the part wiped out in the '46 tsunami. There are some newer strip malls on the way out of Hilo towards Keaau. Hilo is not a city, it is a town. There is ONE what used to be the hospital and is now the medical center in Hilo. There is one hospital in Kona and one in Waimea and I think there is another small one in Pahala although that one may have closed when the sugar companies died. There is a medical complex in Honokaa and some doctor's offices scattered here and there. That's about it for medical facilities on this island unless you count school nurses offices for the entire island.
