Husband and I relocating to Kauai...nervous
Hello All!
My husband just received a transfer to Kauai and I am full of questions. We have two dogs and I read about the quarantine, but I am concerned about their quality of life while in the kennel. Any advice?
Also, where is a good place to live on Kauai? It is just my husband and I and I would like a safe place while he is at work.
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

i did not have to kennel my dogs as i had family in CA hold them for me for the 6 mos. quarantine time and then had them sent out. check with the humane society concerning the paperwork, shots involved etc. it's a ton of paperwork and takes 6 to 9 mos. for the whole process and runs about 1,000 per animal buy the time you get them here. however, i do have a friend that had to put hers in quarentine...not a good idea, imo....she says her dogs have never been the same....it's very much like a dog pound situation, she said it broke her heart everytime she went to visit....

Where to live on Kauai
Kauai is a very safe place anywhere IMO..Wailua Homesteads is a delightful residential area, higher up than lower Kapaa, so cooler, and has a gorgeous view of Mt Waialeale. Just about anywhere is beautiful.... I envy you. Don't worry too much about the dogs. Get their shots and I doubt you'll have to experience a locked up quarantine. It used to be four months, and unless something has changed very recently, no quarantine is necessary anymore.

More thoughts on Kauai
Just thought of a couple other places to live; Kilauea, north of Kapaa towards Princeville. Waimea, down south, is warmer but nice. You'll have no problems I'm sure!!!

As Long As All Shots (that Hawaii Requires) Are Up To Date....remember There Is 120 Days Waiting Period After Shots, Then, Yes They Can Be Taken Right On In....it's Worth The Wait. If You Have To Come Before That, Maybe A Family Member Can Keep Them For You....any Dog Under 10lbs Can Ride In The Cabin With You On Most Airlines...you'll Just Have To Ck. With Them...good Luck!

no quarantine, but you have to read the direct release requirements and make sure you do everything EXACTLY on the time frame and list. rabies titer has to be drawn, overnight mail to Univ of Kansas, etc.
i did everything, moved to Kauai since that is where my family is, and had a job that relocated me there, paid a sign on bonus etc, but left after one month. i have visited the island for my whole 42 years of my life and let me tell ya, living there is a WHOLE other ball game than visiting/vacationing there. i couldnt get back to the mainland fast enough. if you want to know the reasons, you can email me, but it looks like you have no choice as your husband is relocating there, so just make the best of it and i sure hope he makes alot of money. even with my high salary, i would have had to actually for the FIRST time in my life, do a budget when it comes to grocery shopping. here on the mainland, i buy whatever i WANT to eat

North Shore rocks, rains alot in winter, but the most lush and beautiful
area.
Quarantine laws have changed, contact your local vet for current info.
For some reason, Kauai rentals are not very animal friendly. Best to also
contact a realtor to see if any rentals allow dogs.
Good Luck

so true, Kauai rentals are not very animal friendly. i had pictures of my pug and boston terrier, PLUS LANDLORD REFERRALS SAYING MY DOGS WERE CLEAN, QUIET, WELL BEHAVED. here i was, an Emergency Room Registered Nurse, with a very good STABLE income, and i couldnt find a SINGLE place that would rent to me. i stayed with my family while trying to find a rental for me and my dogs. my family lives on the North Shore. most UNFRIENDLY place for renting with dogs, because i guess they dont want to take chances with properties that are potential BIG vacation rental income producing places.
i couldnt leave fast enough and am glad to be back in Texas where there is LOTS of land and wide open spaces and never have a problem finding a place to live with my beloved furbabies-now THIS is paradise to me-where i can live happily with my dogs; the only good thing that came out of moving to Kauai is that after 20 years of envy of my sister living there, i no longer envy her. she can continue to live in her 300 sq foot studio for $800/month with no kitchen or laundry, and barely make ends meet, and not be able to afford to eat salads because a bag of lettuce is $6.50! and the police department is corrupt (she even admits it and has a boyfriend who is a cop on the force). and i couldnt stand the fact that you are judged automatically as a haole/mainlander and talk about STINK EYE. they must have thought i was just another one of them rich mainland California folks who come out there and buy million dollar homes and increase the prices out there. some welcome i got, for someone who just wanted to live with my family and to GIVE to the community by bringing to them a very experienced Emergency Room Trauma Registered Nurse. oh and by the way, if you dont smoke pakalolo, or even more so, if you are against it, you will find a very very small almost non-existent social life. i couldnt stand sitting there drinking my morning coffee on the lanai before going to work and smelling MARIJUANA lingering in the air from some pakalolo head in the next condo. UGH

belle....couldn't have said it better!!!! touche'......ps what part of tx did you go back to?...we're movin to austin in oct. 07.....i won't know what it's like to not have to budget for food!!...and we make 100,000 a year here!!!!....u are so right about "no pets allowed"...it's about a 10% chance of finding a rental that will take them (then your up against everyone else on the island going for the same rental cuz of their pets)....like you said...visiting is so different from living there...
