If you have not already gotten a job offer with a confirmed start date by Hawaii County, don't plan on getting a police job for a long time. A friend had applied but with the downturn in economy, Hawaii county police have a rash of qualified candidates, some with very impessive work experience, so they can be very picky in hiring.

As for chefs, I understand that the resorts are laying off and many resturants are closing or curtailing hours, so you may want to line up something in advance.

The Big Island is big, but with an already tight job market, experienced and people who have already established residency on the island have a stronger chance for the available jobs.

Hi hockey19,

I've posted several links to restaurants on the Kohala coast in other threads about Big Island dining...

1) Click on Search at the top of this page, then click Advanced Search

2) Put in keywords "Kohala coast restaurants" or whatever you want to search for in the Hawaii forum...

3) Under the "Search in Forums" heading, select Hawaii....

Hope this helps....(Kohala coast is where most of the more upscale restaurants are located. You can also search Kona, Pahoa, Hilo for more information...) Just keep in mind that the decrease in tourism is causing a higher level of competition for both jobs and patrons....doing thorough research is recommended!

The move is still years away. I am graduating from college in spring '10 and plan to get into the law enforcement field here and then a few years down the road(less than 5) move to hawaii. I just wanted to get some facts about things so thanks for all your help.

Well, between now and then, you will have time to vacation in Hawaii! Yay! Then you can see how the culinary scene is. There is a bakery for sale whose owner died last spring. For a mere $455K you can have a bakery with a great ocean view.

Yes, i have been to oahu, maui and kauai but have not yet been to the BI. My parents have friends who used to live on oahu and they say that they love the BI. But i have also heard horror stories from others about the BI. I'm trying to convince my parents to take a trip this summer to the BI. Thats why so far i love the BI, it actually seems affordable for housing.

It would be even more affordable if there were a few jobs around here, as well. Can you bring a job with you?
