I have a question for locals: Thanksgiving customs? We were invited to our friends' beautiful house in Lanikai for Thanksgiving. I know we are to bring food, what are some of the most appreciated foods to bring, what do you love to see on the table at a Thanksgiving luau, and what about other hostess gifts? Thank you for any ideas.

we do a "traditional" meal. however, a lot of local families add platters of sushi and/or noodles. depends on the family/ethnicity. you might find anything from filipino, chinese, japanese and other foods. and don't forget the dessert.

hostess gifts: wine or flowers, imo.

Lanikai is pretty haole so mainland food would probably be a well received. If you have a family traditional food, then taking a home made family recipe would probably go over well. You could ask your hostess what to bring and she may request a dessert or a specific side dish since otherwise you may end up with fourteen versions of kalua pig and no rice.

Fresh flowers or a potted blooming orchid are a good hostess gift.
