"Black Friday"? What's that? Never heard of it.
For appliances and furniture, you could check Craig's List and yard sales. There are a lot of folks moving to the mainland these days and very few of them have enough money to ship appliances and big furniture.
Which island will you be on? That makes a huge difference as to what is available if you are buying the items new. Generally, though, on most of the islands, if you see something you need or want buy it then since it may not be there when you go back. Seasonal items such as Christmas trees and Thanksgiving turkeys will either be way overstocked or understocked and it seems to alternate each year. Last Easter the stores ran out of those marshmallow "Peeps" so next year should be a good Peep year. Furniture and appliances, though, don't follow the alternate seasonal differences but they do sell out and then take a long time to be restocked.
Back to the original topic of how folks can afford to live here, there seem to be more and more folks unable to do that lately. Lots of folks moving to the mainland since they can't afford to live here anymore. They all seem to be going somewhere different, too. Utah, Missouri, New York and Oregon were the states where the folks having moving sales last weekend were heading off to.
