yeah, I sure you wont regret it! NY is a wonderful place! you dont need a car, and and you can still use your bomber jacket and aloha shirts, there are summers in NY, and there are also gorgeous beaches, hiking trails, mountaing, skiing and ice skating in the winter, white water rafting, you can drive to state parks and see caves, waterfalls, beautiful red, yellow and auburn leaves in the fall. You can see sacura and mognolias blooming in the spring-all over the city, it is so beautiful.
gorgeous hudson river and forest. there are tons of campgrounds, hinking trails, beaches....We lived there for 8 years, and we still did not explore everything. and we actually could AFFORD it, as well as afford going to great concerts like PInk Floyd, hockey games, inernational soccer games, movie premiers, best restaurants in the world. A week before I left for Maui, I have been to a broadway show, a jazz concert, we went out to Long Island on a boat ride aroud the bay, and I saw a Salvador Dali exhibition, all in just that one week. Such a horrible place to live! I am sure you will suffer in New York!

Jungjohann, in New York you can rent a place for a $1000, and buy a $80 metro card, thats all you need. you dont need a car or gaz-you know how fantastic it is to have everything within one block of your house? bank, stores, pharmacy, doctors, restaurants, bars, all within walking distance.
food is dirt cheap, there is so much of it, i used to buy a $1.99 slice of pizza for luch-fantastic pizza, you cant find anything like it over here, not even near! there are street vendors who sell middle eastern food-falafel, chicken with rice, one portion is $5 and is enough for 2 people. and I am talking about good food, not ramen noodles or cans, and we did not have to grow it oueselves. We used to buy it with my coworker and share it for lunch. and when we felt like going crazy, we would to go a french bistro and have a high quality french luch for $8. I can buy one crappy ice cream here for $8, or two pretzels at the mall....

Julia,
All my best to you and your ohana, as in family.... I'm certain we all find our own, "places" in life, mine happens to be Hawaii, actually, my niece lives in New York City, just can't picture myself living there, in fact, can't picture it at all!!!! Sorry your experience here wasn't what you had expected, it's not all the "postcard" experience as it is sometimes portrayed to be, and I'm certain, that for some, New York City isn't the same either,,,,,,,,Hope you have some warm clothing left up there, climate here can get to be rather boring at times, how many 78 degrees average temp can a guy handle, but I try to put up with it,,,,,,, Actually think the cost of living, this time of year, is more expensive in New York than it is on Maui, (lets just keep that a secret!!!!!)
Aloha and Melekalikimaka, as in, MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!

Nyc
Having been born and raised in NY....I have to agree with the ones who said NY is the stinkiest place on earth. It is soooo overcrowded and filthy that I would never go back there to live. I hardly even go to visit parents, brothers, etc that still live in NY-been over 4 years now! NY is extremely hot and humid in the summers and the winters are sooo grey and cold. The best time of year is around September/October when the temps are around 50-60. The rest of the time it is either burning or freezing. Having been in Hawaii now for over 15 years and in So Cal for around 5...I would never relocate back east. We are planning to leave the islands for good as soon as I find a job somewhere on the west coast or pacific northwest as we desire to own a new home that is 4+ bedrooms that is still affordable at $250,000. Just can't imagine buying a small 900 sq ft 2 bedroom condo in Hawaii for this kind of money. Completely realize the cost of "paradise" is worth it to some folks but we have had our share. Julia, I would definetely choose Maui over NY. -Sorry

Can we please keep straight when we are talking about New York CITY (NYC), versus New York (the State - NY)???? NYC IS the stinkiest place, the prices you have quoted are accurate, there IS lots of great food available, everything is within walking distance... It's a certain place, I can see why people love it, I personally think it's a great place to visit but I could NEVER live there, but to each his or her own.
NEW YORK is an entire, large state, MOST of which is not like NY CITY at ALL! It too has its ups and downs, most of it is very CHEAP to live in, and very COLD and snowy, and somewhat depressed economically, and some people love it and some people hate it, but it's NOT NEW YORK CITY.
Sorry for shouting, but please use the proper abbreviation - NYC - when you are talking about the city. Else you'll confuse people and they'll expect to move to Delaware County or Buffalo and have things be like Julia describes NYC - they'll be SO bummed that they need a car, and a 4-wheel-drive to boot! It's like assuming that all of Hawaii is Honolulu...
But seriously, folks, Merry Christmas! Mele Kalikimaka! Chappy Chanukkah! Swinging Solstice! Kwazy Kwanzaa! and all that! I'm off to play Santa...

Absolutely right. What a diff one letter makes: NY, NYC, or NYS. People often lump all Californians together too. LA is just one place in CA, and many Californians are not politically liberal and well to do, but some might think so by the way some people talk.
