Do any of you have any comments on this? Could a history major with a good work ethic make it in Hawaii?

My mother lived there for years in Pohoa. Local economy away from the tourist traps is tough though. Land can be relatively cheap in the areas closest to volcanic activity-lol.

I had two pals in hs who moved to the state I lived in at the time who had previously lived in Hawaii while their dad was stationed at a naval installation there. They loved it there so much. So consequently experienced a tough time acclimating to the damp PN weather.

Oh now it's PC Woman To The Rescue!!!! I should have known it from your username...it's all One Great Big World, and can't we all just get along? I mean, we are all aliens, after all...sniffle.

Give me a break. And I will beat both of those Russian broads/sistahs of yours anytime in arm wrestling or creative mud slinging. Bring them on...

I will apologize for having a non-pc sense of humor. But if you don't like a place, then shut the hell up and find a way to tolerate it. All that whining is irritating.

And I hear you MadRussian! Now there's a guy with a sense of humor. Just like We're All Aliens, I too can make myself the default spokesperson for all males on the island...You go guy!

Hello Nelli,
North Carolina on the coast is varied in the winter. Sometimes it gets down to 30 at night...it even freezes once in awhile, and there can be a 3-4 day cold snap. We've had snow, but it is once every few years. The days can be from 40-50 degrees or 65-to even 70 degrees. The other day I was outside in my shorts sunning myself. You could even go down to the ocean, but it was chilly at the water's edge. We live in Emerald Isle which is right on the ocean. We went 20 miles inland to Havelock and without the breezes off the ocean it was really warm. We were all outside riding bikes in shorts with the grandkids. We have large windows facing the east, and barely have to use our heat in the winter.....in fact most nights I sleep with the window open a crack because the house has warmed from the sun during the day. We have some folks from Michigan and Ohio who use North Carolina as their winter residence instead of heading to Flordia. But those who like it really warm for the winter, will have to go further south.

Now, if you are in the mountains on the western side of the state, it's a whole different story. There is lots of snow, ski resorts, and winter sports. There can be lots of snow. This is a large state and the climate is quite different along the coast in the east, vs the mountains in the west. The summers in Asheville are cool, unlike the coast of North Carolina which is muggy.

Marie,
Wow! Yes, I will definitely have to visit there someday. It sounds wonderful! I am temporarily in Dallas, TX right now, staying with my parents before we fly out to Hawaii, and it is also much more mellow when it comes to weather. Yesterday it got up to 82 and we spent the day at the Dallas Arboretum walking around in shorts and sandals. It does get chilly here too though. Today it's only going to get into the 40s, and tomorrow the 30s. It's been nice though since St Louis doesn't normally get the breaks in weather during the winter. Thanks for responding and painting such a lovely picture of your home state!
Nelli
