Nice Place for Teacher and Nurse
Hi there,
I'm an elementary school teacher and my wife will have finished her B.Sc in April and will be a registered nurse. I would estimate our combined income in Hawaii at 100,000 (however I'm open to suggestions that this is wrong.)
We would like to move to Hawaii. We are researching where to send off our resumes. We would like a safe place where we could raise a family. Rural is not desirable...semi-rural is OK. No less than 50,000 people I think. I don't want to close off our options seeing as how the big island looks like it has some good houses. I would like to rent out part of the house (garage?) but maybe that needs to wait until later.
I know this is a big question. I've combed the boards and seen people asking for the "best places". Well, for us that means safety, good community, not too many people, and somewhere where we could buy a house.
Any thoughts? If I need to add more information I'd be more than happy.
Or maybe people could suggest some places and I could start looking, then become more specific afterwords.
Thanks!
Dave

The State is called Hawaii and one of the islands in the State of Hawaii is called Hawaii. Which Hawaii are you talking about? It's like saying you want to move to New York; is that New York as in the city or New York as in the state?
The STATE OF HAWAII is made up of many islands, each with it's own flavor and feel. Kaui is not like Maui and Oahu is not like Hawaii, etc.
Have you been to the 6 primary islands of the State and experienced them?

My impression is that teachers are hired and placed by the Hawaii Department of Education. You can't apply to individual schools, and may not have much say in where you end up teaching. You may want to find out more about that system before moving on with move plans, since it will affect where your wife ends up applying, and so on. You can start with the Dept. of Ed. website here: Teaching in Hawai'i
Good luck!

Ummmmhmmm. . . you might possibly want to visit before you plan to move. Either to the island or the state. "This is desirable," this is not . . . . I strongly recommend a lengthy stay and/or tour before you finalize any "plans" to live in the islands. To quote the common bumper sticker, "This ain't the mainland!"

The island of Hawaii is more affordable than Oahu, Maui or Kauai but there are a lot less jobs than on Oahu, Maui or Kauai so affordability won't do you a lot of good without any income at all. All the schools are in one big state system, too. Finding employment is probably your biggest hurdle. After employment is secured, then you could look for housing. You don't want to buy a house until you have a job and have lived in the area for at least six months to decide if you like the area and want to stay.
Depending on where you are moving from, it may not be anything like what you are used to at all.
Many folks go to the mainland to raise families since things are so expensive here.

If you and your wife truly want to teach children, and want your own children to have a future, I would suggest running away from the "Hawaii Idea" as fast as you can.
The school system here is the most corrupt I have seen in that past 18 years. The School Board and the Board of Education is the worst bunch of money grubbing trash. It is beyond bel;ief how these people keep getting elected to their important positions.
Our "tour " here shall not be completed for another 18 months, but we are taking all 4 of our children out of this school system that cannot teach. A Department of Education always looking for ways to get money... free money, at the costs of the very students they are supposed to educate.
I guess 1.7 million dollar trips to Disneyworld is more important than my sophmore in High School having a text book in Algebra II. Not to mention only teaching what is needed to pass assesment tests to recieve a pat on the back and more grant money... Oh wait... I forgot, the kids are still failing those tests in huge numbers...

Armyvet, you have a total of 6 posts and all of them are the same rant. I'm sorry you and your family hate everything about Hawaii, but we got your message already...loudly and clearly.

Maybe because I cannot believe people would sugar coat the truth when people kind of depend on the information given on this forum....You do realize that stuff happens quite often here... crimes against those of us that arent from here... the preferential treatment and such... or shall we fudge the truth like the BOE does consistantly here?
That being said I will not post anymore on here and hope the lies do not come as easily with your own "Ohana" as they do here....
