Default Intense Low Is Heading To The Islands

Ok, so says the weather forecasters. The last time this was supposed to happen we had a day or two of light to moderate rain for most areas with a few locations receiving heavy rainfall. I hope the same happens, we really need the rain, just not all at once. I much prefer the 4-5 inch rain total over 24 hours instead of 10 minutes. Lets see if they get this one right.

My father was a meteorologist at Hickam AFB for a while during WW2, he found it to be very frustrating, cause Hickam would be nice and sunny all day, and he could just look up at the Koolaus above Nuuanu, and it would be raining like,, you know,, all day long.. We had a major downpour here on Maui a while back, I could look south from my place towards Makenna, sky absolutlely black, and Kihei, not a drop!!!! Hope this storm, supposed to hit sometime tomorrow??? spreads a little of da Ua, for those up in Maine, that would be Hawaiian for rain, (kind of catchy, isn't it??), on Maui. Right now it's the Vog, I don't think it's ever been this bad. Could somebody please tell Madame Pele to take a few years off!!!! Well, maybe not, Haleakala is in my backyard, and is way overdue. And Kaimuki, mahalo for the link!!

Aloha and okolemaluna

thanks, I'm always trying to stick my nose into everything around here. LOL! Here's an updated forecast, it appears the all of the ingredients needed for a big weather event are forming: strong low-level convergence, deep moisture, instability and strong upper-level dynamics.

"A GOOD CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS KAUAI AND OAHU FOR LATE TONIGHT AND THURSDAY CONSIDERING THE UNSTABLE THERMODYNAMIC PROFILE."

Any physicists around?

I'm not a physicist, but I used to work for some and took a course in meteorology! UNSTABLE THERMODYNAMIC PROFILE= Lots of warm air rising and then falling, becoming cool, due to the movement of heat (thermodynamic). The usual reason is a cold front butting up against warmer air. The profile just means what the air is doing. They should say that and get it over with. Weather people are getting PRETTY techie these days!

Thanks for the heads up! My son is staying on Oahu and commented yesterday how it's the rainy season but they've had very little! Now, when he calls, I can warn him about the thunderstorms Do they get as bad there as, say, the Midwest mainland?

Here, on Maui, southside, a big storm is actually a real "event", because Kihei very rarely gets rain, and a thunderstorm with lightening is normally something to celebrate!!!! When I was living/working on Oahu, had a condo, 15th floor up on Nuuanu Avenue, big lanai, furnished with those plastic chairs and a table, was REALLY storming one night, windy, thunder, lightening, the works. Get up next morning, there used to be four of those plastic chairs on the lanai, now there's only three!!!! Look across Nuuanu Avenue at the graveyard, there's my chair, resting comfortably............ Why is it that Kauai and Oahu get all the fun when it comes to a good storm, as long as no one gets hurt, that is. 4:00 PM on Maui, little makaninui, as in windy, but sunny and clear!!!! Eh, Kaimuki, are you actually in Kaimuki???????

Aloha and okolemaluna

Here are the rainfall tallies thus far for Oahu thru 7:35 a.m....impressive, the NWS got this one right. Not too much thunder, but very heavy rain and a LOT of wind here in Kaimuki. Power was lost for a short period of time too.

Hopefully we will get some rain in a day or two. It's been terribly dry this "rainy season".
