Oahu has the most heating and air conditioners since they have the most big hotels and commercial buildings. You may want to try looking into water heating and solar applications since there is a lot more of that than either air conditioning (not much and mostly commercial) and heating (almost none). Oahu also has more jobs than the outer islands since they still have a few more tourists than the rest of the islands. Molokai is in a serious world of hurt as far as jobs go. Lanai is small and not a lot of jobs there. Next worst is probably the Big Island since the tourism drop was severe last year (2008) and the outer islands felt it worse than Oahu. Then probably Kauai and then Maui. Oahu would be the best, but it won't be good since there has been a huge drop in revenues for almost all businesses as well as the state itself this past year.
Do whatever you can to keep your monthly expenses as low as possible. On Oahu, that would be sharing an apartment and riding the bus. Fortunately, there are many apartment-to-share opportunities and the bus is pretty good. If they start building that rail transit system on Oahu, there may be construction/maintenance type jobs there.
Also, get a round trip ticket when you fly out, they aren't hardly any more expensive than one way. Get an open ended return date and you'll have an emergency "out" if you need it.
