I could be wrong on this, it's just what I observed.

Big Island you have your choice of drags, oval dirt track, go karts and the SCCA pine cone racers. I think they put in a keiki motocross, too. Over by the old Hilo airstrip and behind the Hilo dump is a huge track area where those folks go make noise and dust just about every weekend. Folks that race on the roads around here generally die because they fall over the edge or a rock or feral pig gets them so it is a lot safer to go to the track.

When I read this what immediately jumped to mind is that you were trying to imitate John Wayne, then I realized you were responding to a poster with the name "Pilgrim".
... back to your regularly scheduled program ...

Other than this, there isn't too mush else to disagree with. You can't be serious about this. Anyone who would make such a remark hasn't lived a single day on the islands.

Actually, I've lived here for over 5 months now, and I haven't seen or experienced any racism either. I have heard that it exists, but no one in my family has witnessed, or been the target of, any negative racist behavior. We are all caucasian. We work in a private school as a teacher, in a law office as a lawyer, and as a self-employed musical instrument repairer. Our kids participate in many different kinds of extracurricular activities including some that are not school-based. I have made two day trips to Oahu since moving here (and one two-day one, before moving here). We have joined the chamber of commerce and attended various social and cultural events, and hired a draftsman, and various construction workers to build a building, and yard workers to do things around our house and yard. We have sold things on Craig's List and had a yard sale. We have gotten to know several of our neighbors. We go to the beach about once every week or two. We have been to two parties.
What are we not doing, that would expose us to all this racism? Or do you think we are just blind, and people are really cheating us and teasing us all behind our backs? Whatever - maybe it's just better on Kauai. Wait, don't tell anybody...

it's so friendly and wholesome, it's disturbing.
naah, it's got to be one of the best places in america to raise children because of the wholesomeness of the culture and people.
but if you are not an outdoorsy or beachy person, it doesn't make a lot of sense to live there because the housing is expensive. everything else is pretty much the same.
but you also save money in other ways because you really don't need new clothes. the weather is pretty much the same year round. i really like how the locals are very down to earth and have their weekend barbecues all the time. they do tend to have the chickens and cars parked in front of their lawn though, they are like the ghetto people of hawaii but a lot safer and friendly to be around. if it wasn't for them, it would be an uptight place though-aloha. it's a notch above the mainland in just about everything.
well, it's like another country and the u.s. only technically. it's nothing like the mainland which is a good thing. you want to get away so it can be different, not fly half way across the pacific and end up in the same environment would suck.
so to keep it that way, people should just visit and leave so it won't get tainted anymore than it might get.
with the influx of so many people, it's losing it's charm and relaxing appeal. there are lots of condominiums going up and shopping plazas. it's disgusting.

"What mainlanders don't know"...that's me, brah!
Great post, Jungjohan; the irony was berry goood. The call of Aloha gets a little stronger in my spirit's ears every winter; especially today with more freezing weather up here by the Canadian border in WA.
The "stars" haven't yet aligned to make the path clear to Hawai'i. The B.I. seems to be the only place with any homes under a quarter-million bucks. The vog is a problematic question to me; I guess Mountain View/Volcano is approaching uninhabitable now? Perhaps Hawaiian Beaches' properties gets enough Tradewinds to be mostly cough-free?
Since you've been there over three decades, I'm guessing that you have a constant airflow, or at least the sulphur dioxide particles are pretty sparse.
I have an ol' '55 GMC fatfender pickup which I'd pack with sealed household goods & ship to Alohaland, noting that rust seems to be pervasive there, eh?
Anyway, I thought I'd check in after a long absence. My heart/soul yearns to be away from the frosted grays and soggy-cold Spring. May Pele be mericful, brah. Mahalo & Aloha.
