Hi all,
First, thanks to all those who live in Hawaii who post here. I have learned a lot from reading! My husband is trying to decide whether to accept a job on Oahu (downtown). We have researched a lot and two areas we considering living are Kailua and Hawaii Kai. We have read up on both, have looked online at houses, etc., but would love to hear opinions from those that are familiar with them. Any thoughts on one versus the other? Thanks in advance for any feedback! |

My Pick Would Be Kailua...especially Near Lanikai....commute Would Be 1/2 Hour To 45 Min. Depending Where He Will Get Off In Honolulu...hawaii Kai Is Also Very Nice, But The Commute Can Be Awful!....keep In Mind There's One Road In And One Road Out Either Way...if Theres An Accident Forget It....just Call Your Boss And Wait For The Traffic To Move.....kailua Is More Old Time Hawaii, Greener, More Lush...hawaii Kai More California Type Atmosphere...but Also, Very Nice In It's Own Way....alot Of New Homes In Hawaii Kai....good Luck! And I'm Sure You Know By Now, It's Very Expensive To Live On Oahu!

Having lived in both I would say you couldn't go wrong in either. Kaliua has a great beach and is more of a complete town where Hawaii Kai is a suburb of Honolulu. Hawaii Kai has a newer, cleaner look and feel. If you have a boat (and a lot of money) there is nothing in the world like living on the Hawaii Kai Marina. 5 minutes by boat to dining, movies etc or the Pacific Ocean!
