Default cost of living in Honolulu/Oahu

Hi there I’m trying to find out about accommodation costs in Honolulu/Oahu . I realise its generally very expensive and have bin trawling the internet for information but it’s hard to get past the surface of hotels and top end accommodation. I want to come to Hawaii for 1-2 semesters as I’m a glass artists studying in Britain and I have the opportunity to study at Manoa University which I desperately want to do but the costs involved are making it more and more unlikely. I just wondered if anyone could give me any advice on absolute cheapest options. My budget has slightly increased now and I may be able to afford about £200 - £300 (absolute top end) a month for rent and would like to be as rural as possible but still finding it hard to get an idea of what’s possible with that. I’m not fussy and would live in a shack if I could find one. I just need a place to live, ideally a bit out of the crowds. I'm also very happy to live on small boat or truck but I’m finding it hard to get an idea of potential prices i.e. what you can get a boat for that’s on its last legs and probably not advertised in the classifieds as they all seem to be expensive and shiny. Anyway you probably get the idea; it’s got to be cheap. Hope to hear from you and really appreciate any advice. Cheers

You Might Be Able To Rent A Small Bedroom From Someone. Food Will Be Very Expensive. Not Anything "country" Near Manoa. You Could Live A Bit Farther Out And It Will Be Cheaper, But Comes With A Commute

My brother live above the university. It's a nice area. The cheapest way to live is to move in with a group of folks and split the rent. Way to hard to live in a truck as for sure you'll get rolled. The habour is a way from school to. Best is to into the University caht group, contact the British emabassey and se what happens. Good luck mate.

£200 - £300 is around $400 - $600, right?

You should be able to find a roommate situation near the university where you'll pay $600. You'll get your own room most likely in a 4-bedroom apartment. Take a look on the Honolulu section of craigslist.com for roommate situations.

This is not anent any of thesae threads, but does antone have any idea of the annual suitability of $40-50K (running costs, ex-accommodations) for a retired couple, no kids, minimal utilities/miscellaneous/food expenses? Or who can refer me to a more suitable site/forum?

Many TIA,
