Even if limited Hawaiian sovereignty was ever granted, it would likely stipulate to the BIA ruling that casino operations only allowed if the state ammends that action. And as anyone who has lived in the islands can tell you, hell has a better chance of freezing over before that happens in this Democratic state.

There is gambling in Hawaii, has been for decades, just isn't done in a casino, more than likely in a carport or garage on a Friday night. Ever been to a cockfight????

Was invited a few times, but never quite made it. The gardner at a place I used to live on the Hamakua coast would update me each Monday morning about his winnings over the weekend.
When I was teaching, we would sometimes be on campus on the weekends and would take a break on Sunday afternoons to count the number of cars that came racing across one of the old bridges in Ewa when the police went out to break up the cockfights...
Now I'm just waiting for the cockfight to break out in my back yard. Seems we have a few new neighbors who have each brought in a few roosters...they come visit to eat our cat food. And I'm not a morning person. It just might be me starting that fight!
As for casinos...I also prefer leaving them to Vegas...I'd much prefer to see our economy grow stronger through other venues.

Didn't they have a vote, maybe twenty years ago, to legalize gambling? As I recall one of the Waikiki hotels, think it was the Hilton, was so certain of the outcome that they actually remodeled one of the floors, put in the slot machines, black jack tables, roulette wheels, the works......and the measure was voted down.
And yea, roosters will make ya nuts, night person or not. Was working on the MEO building on Molokai years ago, GC rented a house way above Kaunakakai, was real nice, until around 3:30 am, when the roosters, must have been on crack, would start going absolutely lolo!!!! Ended up staying at the Hotel Molokai.

Casinos, I'm all for it! Geez, we don't even have a lottery. Sam Boyd gaming stands to lose millions if Hawaii builds a few casinos. I'm not much of a gambler but I see no reason why there should be no casinos.

i love gambling and made trips to vegas as often as possible. love the shopping, too--trader joe's and bath and body works (if you are in the military, you can get b & b works there). everything else you can probably get over here. however, since purchasing the lot up at mauna loa, vegas will have to wait. i want to vacation and explore the big island.
when i used to own a business at the navy exchange/commissary, most of the baggers were filipino and they would invite us to parties all the time. they taught us how to play pepito (spelling), a card game. lots of gambling and money exchanging hands.
as for chicken fighting--when i was a teenager, i used to go to the ones down on hakimo road in wai'anae. good fun for me but not for the birds.
casinos, i don't think that will ever happen. there are gamling parlors in downtown honolulu, but i'd be a little crazy to venture into one of those.

I think it would be great too. Maybe just for one island to have casinos. Let Native Hawaiians own and run them too!

Now that's the part I don't understand. Native American/Indians have their own land, and plenty of casinos, many of them are raking in money big time. But Native Hawaiians are given a little property here, a little there, yet aren't given a large enough parcel to really do anything commercial with, and, heaven forbid, a casino and gambling!!!!! Doesn't make any sense to me.

The hawaiians should open prostitution houses too. What a wonderful place this would be with giant casinos, mexicans trying to hand you porno adds, filthy streets and legalized prostitution. Who wouldn't want that?
