A lottery could possibly benefit not only the winner, but the state as well. Take those tax dollars and put them into the educational system.
And Mauidud, you never mentioned Las Vegas when you made your post, so how was I to ascertain that? Anyways, work on aka'aka for a bit, may lower your blood pressure. All in jest of course..

Aloha
Aka'aka=laugh

Prostitution and casinos go hand in hand. Anybody that thinks that won't happen is a fool. They could always call it Paniolo Ranch instead of Mustang.

I don't think Oahu needs casinos to have a problem with prostitution. Take what has been more or less a US military base, (Oahu), since the days before WW2, thousands and thousands of military personell, and guess what goes hand in hand with a lonely, (horney), GI or Sailor, you guessed it.... A little temporary companionship. Been that way on Oahu for deacdes, nothing to do with casinos.

Aloha and okolemaluna

You're a quick wit! Of course you're irony is correct; 2 of these have been successful it appears, BUT does everybody know the price to the surrounding community of locals? I don't know about Las Vegas and Reno as I've never been there so I can't comment, but I can tell you about Atlantic City. It is a sh....hole. The city is a dump overall, especially just outside the the immediate areas surrounding the casinos.

I know casinos can bring in money, but for who, and at what price? As I said previously, I don't advocate an anti-casino agenda, commercial progress is needed especially in the Big Islands Puna and Ka'u districts. I'm only concerned that casinos can use their powerful lobby machines and get deals with empty promises from vulnerable communities looking for a quick fix. If casinos are to be considered, GUARANTEES must be part of the deal, and realistically, even then don't expect a magic bullet to cure all the ills of the community, it just doesn't seem to ever work out as great as promised and hoped for. As someone suggested, maybe a very limited introduction one step at a time with close local community supervision might be something to consider, but that also can be risky! Study this carefully before jumping on the bandwagon.

If not casinos, how about sports betting. I don't think that would be soo bad.

Coming this November, we'll have a referendum on the ballot, asking voters to approve casino operations in our county. Other counties have voted down requests in the past, but this time with the declining economy and loss of jobs, it may be approved. Can't decide whether it is good or bad. I just know we need a shot in the arm.

If you do get casinos it would be nice if they were run by the Native Hawaiians. They are after all the native people of that state.

I really dont want casinos in hawaii, if there is gambling organized crime will move in on it and soon loan sharks and bookies will run the streets. Also some families will be hurt due to people who develop gambling addictions sooo keep the gambling in vegas

gambling, organized crime, loan sharking and bookies might not run the streets, but they are definitely here.

Gambling is already here, wait until football season and get the pali spreadsheet, been around forever.......Friday, Saturday night poker games under the carport, nothing new......Cockfighting and betting....... been around for quite a while, I do object to dogfighting, thats just uncalled for, and sadistic, but a good catfight?????????? At least they do the basic hit and run, lot of fur but no body parts.........Isn't there anything about Hawaii not to like??????? Moderator cut: edit And, if you need a shot in the arm, perhaps gambling wouldn't be a good idea???????

Aloha and okolemaluna, puuwai nui for your brother.............
