Question Help..Considering going to college in Honolulu

I read almost all the posts and still have questions! I have been really excited to move to Hawaii this fall and either attend HPU or Manoa. The deciding factor will be what scholarships I get. I have a few questions though... Is racism really that bad Living in Alaska racism isnt an issue here my best friend is black and my boyfriends is native. I didnt even know racism existed till I was roughly 6 and watched a PBS special LOL ...However I am a 5'4 105lb white girl with waist long blonde hair...so I cant really just get tan and blend in...will I have problems?? My boyfriend looks black in the summer so I assume he will be fine. I really just want to live on Oahu for the school year and see what its like...I may stay longer or go somewhere else. I think that you can have an enjoyable time no matter where you as as long as you hang out with good people and make your own fun. I think it would be a great experience. I have an uncle that has a lot of land on Hilo but figured the schools on Oahu were better? I will be moving with at least my boyfriend and possibly a few friends... were is the best place to live? Also as far as transportation goes is the bus, a car, or a moped better? I also want to learn to surf so how do you cart surf boards around? Also clothing wise being from Alaska I dont have a ton of warm weather clothes although, it does get 80 here for a week or so in the summer. Anyhow, what do most people wear? lol Whats comfortable? I basically will have to buy all new clothes so... Anyhow any help would be appreciated!

you are in a perfect position to try hawaii imo.....young, scholarships, open mind....this is the best way to experience Hawaii....just make sure you have plan b after school in case you don't want to stay....i have some friends that came here for school, stayed a few years and eventually went back to the mainland....what i get from them, is that they have no regrets would do it again!.....if your going to u of h...i would suggest manoa area....the bus system here is great!....i have heard it's very hard for employers to get graduates to stay here after college because the pay is better on the mainland and i'm sure you've heard of the expense to live here, so, they get their degree and move on to better paying areas with lowere cost of living.....wow, i say just shack up with a bunch of friends, learn to surf, party....and then you'll "know" if you want to stay on after that,,,,oh, and save LOTS of money before you come....good luck!
ps you carry your surfboard however you can get it to the beach...top of car...in the car...on the bus...you get the idea....
