From Michigan to Honolulu
Hello everyone,
I just discovered this site, it seems like a great source of info. I have been looking through posts already for answers to my questions, but thought it might be useful to inquire with a separate thread. Any help is much appreciated...
I have just found out that I will be moving to Honolulu to for my internship medical training (just graduated from med school). It's basically a one year commitment, then I'm moving to California to finish my training.
I will be splitting my time pretty evenly in the following hospitals: Kaiser Foundation, Kuakini Medical Center, St. Francis Medical Center , Queen's Medical Center, Straub Clinic and Hospital and the VA Pacific Island's Healthcare. I know, alot of different places. Is there any area in Honolulu that would be in decent proximity to each of these and affordable for a 1200/1500 monthly rent budget.
Also, is it wise to ship your car if you're only going to be there for one year. Are there decent short term vehicle leases in HI. Not sure what to do about this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, sorry about the lack of question marks, but I'm travelling abroad right now and I can't seem to figure out where they are on this damn keyboard...
cheers

Try the Ala Moana area, I've been living there for a few months and it's close to the hospitals, groceries, etc. and you can find rentals around $ 1200 per month. :-)

I'm just perusing, no experience with hawaii...
But in regards to the vehicle, I'd imagine a short term lease or even buying a beater would be much cheaper or as much as shipping.
I'd call around dealerships and see what they can do... and I'm sure there is some online source to browse used cars.

I lived in a suburb of Honolulu the past couple years (not anymore). I know where some of those hospitals are, but not all. I def think you can find a decent place in your price range. I lived in Waipio Gentry (about 20-25 min outside Honolulu when there's no traffic) and paid $1300 for a 2 bdrm. I expect now you could prob find a 1 bedroom for that price.
As far as cars, well, I ended up not shipping my car since I was only going to be there a year and a half. The estimate I got to ship my car from Chicago to Honolulu was just under $2,000. I ended up buying a cheap used car, and then selling it when I left last September.

If you're on your own, you can easily rent a studio or a one bedroom for what you've stated is your budget. Someone has already mentioned Ala moana area - that is good. Downtown is good too - we live in Pauoa & are minutes from everything. I currently work at Queens and it's a five to ten minute drive (depending on traffice). Straub is only a few blocks from Queens. Kaiser is 10-15 minute drive & Kapiolani is about the same. St. Francis Liliha & Kuakini are also very close (1-2 miles from where I am). Not sure where the VA hospital is...
Nu'uanu area is also a good place to look - lots of condos/apartments there too...
