Best luau on any of the islands
Boy, we are having such a hard time choosing a luau to go to. We are staying on Oahu (Ko Olina), but it is not out of the question to take a go! flight to another island to go to the luau.
First of all, what do you think is the best Luau on Oahu, and second - what do you think is the best luau in all of Hawaii?
Thanks everyone!

This is a tough question as luau actually have different themes and schemes. Most are self-serve, but there is at least one on Maui with table service. Some have better food, some have better shows. I've only been to the ones on Maui and there I'd say the Old Lahaina Luau is the best combination of good food, good show and outstanding location. We take people to others if they have really specific preferences.
Sorry, I've never been to one on Oahu, but I've researched them and I know what you're facing.
Best of luck!

Of course locals go to luau's. Last one I went to was for someone finishing their house. They dug a pit big enough to drop a small pickup truck into, lit a huge fire (the fire department showed up, then they stayed for the luau), let the fire burn down to coals, threw in a bunch of banana trunk chunks, put in a large pig, about seven turkeys, several hundred laulau, covered it all with banana leaves, ti leaves, a chunk of canvas and dirt and then opened the first keg of beer. That luau lasted almost three days and they still had plenty of food.

We've been to Paradise Cove twice while staying at the Marriott in Ko Olina. It was much nicer than the hotel sponsored ones we've been to and it's very convenient.

Wait! Wait! Wait! I was referring earlier to commercial luau for show, not da kine we have spontaneously for first birthdays, new homes, weddings, etc.
"hotzcatz" is right (as always) -- of course we go! We go to one with friends and family here and the other with mainlanders.
Both are special in different ways.

When we were on Kauai, we went to the Smith Family luau and it was impressive! First, the name Smith sure doesn't sound very Hawaiian, but it was, and the food and entertainment were awesome. O.K., the poi was not exactly my favorite, but at least I tried it! I would recommend it (the luau, not the poi), but then, it was the only one I've ever been to! I would go again, and will after I relocate in November, when family and friends come to visit.

Just pretend the poi is gravy for the kalua pig and then it is really tasty even for folks used to eating mainland food.
