It is more of a village than a town. There is one cafe, the 50's Cafe, the library is part of the school which has a graduating class of less than two dozen students, the fire station is mostly volunteer folks, there is a police station and a post office. A gas station, a train museum, a small general store and the bakery closed or there would be a bakery as well. I think there is a real estate office, although that may have moved away. There is a nice park down by the ocean, a Farmer's Market on Sundays next to the gas station from 9 am to 1 pm. That's about it. There's some houses, obviously, since you've found one to rent. Up the hill is a mushroom farm. Not a lot of job opportunities in the area, if you need work more than likely you'll be looking in Hilo or Kona. Unless perhaps you could grow stuff and sell it at the Farmer's Market? The next village over, Papaaloa which is almost part of Laupahoehoe has a gym which has a really good haunted house each year.
Laupahoehoe is one of the bigger villages on the coast between Hilo and Honokaa so there isn't a whole lot of stuff in either direction for quite aways. It's really scenic, though, loads of scenery, not as much rain as Hilo but still gets enough rain to be very green.
