The local cows don't have the Bovine Growth Hormone given to them - as far as I've heard, nor are the cows grain fed, it's all just cows eating grass and making grass into milk. (hey, that's a vegetable, so milk is just processed vegetables) The local beef is all the healthy lean grass fed kind, but that has a lot more to do with the cost of imported grain than ranchers looking to provide healthy meat.

I don't know about Oahu, but I know several people around here who have gotten milk goats lately. From what the experienced folks with milk goats have told me, the Nubian goats have milk very similar to cow's milk while the other breeds of goats have milk which is best for cheese making. Most of the newbie goat owners have the Nigerian Dwarfs since they are really cute and small goats, I don't know if they will be all that pleased with the taste of their goat milk once they actually get some. It will be interesting to observe, I'm sure.

I was thinking if it were possible to have a community cow, that would be a good thing. A Holstein cow can give five gallons of milk a day. Our household uses two gallons of milk a week, so we only need a half day per week of milking. If there were fourteen households to share the milking of the cow, then each household would only have to milk once a week to get their full week's milk needs. Providing, of course, they only wanted two gallons a week. If we went for the traditional cow, we would be milking twice a day and be flooded with way more milk than we could use and selling milk is real humbug with the Federal regulations. With a community cow, there is no need for each household to milk every day, all the milk goes to the owners of the cow and it should be a good thing. Somehow, I don't see it working, though. Hard to find that many reliable folks who live close to each other who know how to milk a cow.

It is much easier to just buy a gallon of milk at the grocery even if it does get expensive sometimes.

Nice post Hotz,
When I was in Tahiti a few years ago I was driving around one of the other islands and saw a cow tied to a tree we went back to town and asked a local about the one cow? he said that it weas so and so's but the village all got milk from it.
Your right about the reliability issue you have to milk the cow every day or it will stop producing if we get one person/ family to do this the others could trade there goods for the milk...ie bread ,eggs, fruit you get the piont . Then you get a small community that is self sufficent and stops going to costco. If that happens we might be sewed ? lol

The whole "organic" thing seems to be part scam anyway. If the cows in Hawaii only eat grass that grows from the rain that went thru the VOG, how healthy is that? That isn't something I should pay extra for, is it?

BTW, I love Hawaiian grain fed beef...

Sorry. I LIKE them and will continue to eat them.

Non-vegetarians don't go on forums and push for meat and dairy consumption. If no meat or dairy is what you want to eat, it is fine with me.

Please stop trying to push your beliefs upon others.
Actually, I am NOT a vegetarian. Just happened to stumble upon that site. Not to mention it's vegans who don't eat dairy and meat. We don't need those meat eaters pushing anything, it's already shoved down our throats everyday on tv. Just stating facts. I love meat and cheese. RELAX, I'm not pushing any "beliefs" on anyone. So what if I was vegetarian. Couldn't hurt to open up your mind on being a more healthy individual, could it? Just chiming in on how to save money.

There is not scientific or medical evidence that vegetarians are healthier or live longer than non-vegetarians.

Thanks for the tip! We went up to Haleiwa today and got some butter. We're going to get on their mailing list for their kickoff in June. Fresh local milk in re-usable bottles with the cream on top... I'm so excited! (Oh, and the European style butter is awesome. Went straight home and had some on my homemade banana bread.)

They had cream cheese, too, which I would've bought if we didn't already have the big Costco pack of that!

Get over being vegetarian or not. It is not an issue.

Are you serious? Again, the first one I stumbled upon. Natural Health Remedies & Detox: Does Red Meat Cause Cancer?

Tell that to my girlfriends grama and auntie who BOTH have colon cancer right now. Diets rich in red meat and white rice and canned meat/foods does a body good! Lets drop it already.
