Default Are hawaiians racist (particularly in Hilo)?

Ive read a little about the hostility they have towards immigrants.

Well i'm an east indian (asian indian) from Britain and i've always dreamed of living there, it looks amazing and definately reflects the outdoorsy lifestyle i've always wanted and have the opportunity to work in Hilo for 6 months.

What are the locals there like? In regards to their attitudes to foreign workers/immigrants? I wouldn't pass up this opportunity even if it is negative, but I was just wondering whether anyone with experience could provide some input just so I know what to expect when I get there.

Thanks in advance

Actually there aren't many racists in Hilo. The roads just aren't up to it. For real racists you would have to go to Oahu, and check out the H3 or the H1, plenty of racists up there, especially in Hondas, Acuras and the occaisional Subaru. The real problem in Hilo town is the cannibals, they're all over the place, or was that the cannibus,,,,,,,,,,,,oh well, never mind. Hope this helps....

if you treat people with respect you will be treated the same. there are always a few people in every state/town/country that do not like outsiders

What?
Sorry if my post sounded provocative, it wasn't supposed to be.

Maybe it's because my English isn't too strong and I used a poor choice of words. But I was just wanting an insight into what life is like for foreigners in Hilo.

I've heard about them using the word 'Haole' which apparently is a derogatory term for an outsider?

Haole is the term used when referring to a White person; it is only derogatory when "f*cking" is used before Haole. We often refer to as person's race when speaking about them and none of them are 'racist' unless the "F" term is used also!

There are a lot of immigrants in Hawaii and a lot of different accents- we do not care where you are from as long as YOU are the one who tries to assimilate into our society. If you are open and friendly you will be treated in the same manner. Are there some folks who are miserable human beings? Yes, just as there are people of the same temperament everywhere in the world!

Default Racist

Well I grew up in Hawaii, and im haole, you know the blone hair blue eyes.. when I first moved there i moved to oahu in 1980, and i have to admitt, i was treated very badly, i was once a very quiet girl and then i got into high school and i let them have it, after i got aggressive as they were to me they left me alone... but like they said it depends on where you live actually... now as an adult it was better due to the fact children and yes even high school kids are mean and cruel, BUT they only take after what they were taught so I dont know.. Hawaii is the most beautiful place i have ever been BUT I would not really want to live there again...

Ok, well this is me. Would I be classed as a Haole? And do you think the hawaiians will be able to tell i'm not native/asian?
