Default PCS to Hawaii- where to live

I have been looking to find a place to rent on Oahu. I want to know what the "true" commute to Schofield Barracks is from Ewa Beach and also from the North Shore area. I am having a hard time staying within budget on BAH out there. I am from TN and right now our BAH is more than what our home is. It is just me and my hubby so we were just wondering as we will probably end up picking a place without seeing it in person. (I know to stay away from places that accept section 8- I was told this from a friend who used to live there) I just need to get this right the first time. We would like to be close to the a surfing area so that he can just walk there instead of packing up. That is why we are looking at Ewa Beach and North Shore. Thanks!

How about the commute from Ewa to FT Shafter? We are looking at one of the new communities in Ewa and I have heard the traffic situation is getting better with the widening of Fort Weaver RD. Any info would be appreciated.

I live in Ewa Beach and work on Wheeler AAF(right across from Schofield). I take Kunia rd to work everyday. It's about a 30-35 min drive to work. I leave work at 4:30 and get home around 5:15pm. They are extending the roads going into and out of Ewa Beach but it is a slow going process. Also, there still is new construction being built(new homes, more people, more cars etc...). Don't get me wrong though, I enjoy living in Ewa because we are close to the beach the area is really nice. Darren1969, my husband is stationed at Ft. Shafter and commutes everyday. He leaves around 5:30-5:45am to get to Shafter by 6:30am for PT. He will take Kam Highway instead of H1 because it's less traffic. H1 is really ugly in the mornings due to heavy traffic and cars merging in from the H2. If there is a stalled car or accident on H1 its unbearable. His commute home is roughly about an hour as well. Just depends on the time he leaves Shafter. Normally he leaves around 5:30-6:00pm. If he leaves earlier then it takes him longer to get home because he is dealing with the traffic on H1 and Ft. Weaver Rd into Ewa. If you have any other questions let me know. Hope this helps.

I live on Schofield and if I were to do it over, I would have lived up North Shore - Haleiwa or Waialua. The lifestyle up there is so laid back and the temperature doesn't seem to be as hot as Ewa, which it nice because utilities here can get pretty spendy. I am not sure about the commute in the morning and evening from North Shore, but any commute would be worth it to me to live up there. It's beautiful and the people are great. Hope that helps.

I have a friend who lives in Waialua (town near Haleiwa). He says that the commute to Schofield would be:
"Estimate twenty to thirty minutes, depending what area, Sunset, or Waialua."

Thanks for the info on the Ewa-Shafter commute. We will be on island soon and will get straight to finding a place to live. This website has been great for information!
