can anyone make good hotel/apartment recommendations? we'd like to be on the best beach and if possible have an ocean view overlooking either the sunrise or sunset (Ideally)

we're getting our tickets for free from united :-) using miles. We are therfore having a budget of about 100 a night for hotel. if it's a bit more, for the right place, we're open to that....but we like to get the best deal possible...(hence booking things 6 months in advance) lol

North: The Princeville Hotel overlooking Hanalei bay.

East: The Kauai Marriott Hotel in Kalapaki with its own bay.

South: The Kauai Hyatt, Kauai Embassy Resort, Kiahuna Condos, Sheraton Poipu and Lawai Resorts on the south shore.

West: The Waimea Cottages - very nice plantation style layout.

which side has the best beach (ie. clean, blue, clear water)?
which side has the nices views of the sunset?
which side has rough seas (ie. nice waves about 1 meter)?

Hanalei Beach was rated #1 according to some online poll I forgot but you can google it. I like it.

Waimea/Kekaha for best sunset.

Rough seas depends on weather but anywhere you go is nice.

All those listed are going to be way more than $100 a night. . . try $250-300+ a night. We stayed at the Bestwestern in Kapaa back in January for $112 a night (with tax). In my opinion, there's no need to spend too much on a hotel since you're only there to sleep. The island is small and you can easily drive from any one point to another within 30-45 minutes of very amazing scenic drive. I highly recommend using tripadvisor for your planning.

By the way, the BBQ chicken pizza at Pizzetta in Kappa is the best! Shrimp Station out in Waimea (?) is a must as well.

You want to stay in Poipu in November. The only place I can think of that has a budget of $100 in Poipu is Waikomo Stream Villas. You might get around $100 for the Sheraton on priceline, though. Or you could try a B&B/VRBO rental- that usually saves you money.

Ultimate, I think you may be dreaming about getting an ocean view on the "best" beach for $100 a night.

I don't have any recommendations for a specific place, but suggest that you check into a website called vacation rentals by owner. Getting a small house or condo with a kitchen will save money. Also, since you will probably be doing a lot of sightseeing and driving around the island, you don't need to have your accommodations on the best beach. All beaches are open to the public.

I would look for lodging on VRBO.com, and I would post questions about where to stay and what to do, on the Kauai Forum on TripAdvisor.com. You will find more discussion there about vacation visits, and more here about permanent moves.

Good info and helpful people in both places.

Hank
