It may not be 'astronomical' but it's pretty high--higher than DC, even. I wouldn't do it without a job. You need $ for basics, remember. You can't just pick up and go where you want. I've trie dit. It doesn't work.

me and my husband moved to hawai'i without a job or a place to live. from my research i saw that many employers that were not looking for teachers or nurses didn't want to hire someone who wasn't even on the island yet. why hire you when you might move right back or aren't even there when they can hire someone who is there, front and center? same with a living situation. we just saved all we could for a year and a half, got the cats ready, and left. we payed 1 month in a hotel (it was cheaper than what we pay in rent now to stay there!). we had jobs and a place to live within a week of getting there, our hotel gave us the rest of the months 'rent' back, real sweethearts. the cats were there in less than 2 weeks after that and all was well. it really was a smooth move! not to say that it always happens that way, but that was only last august, and i'm sure things are different for different people. and it's right, money isn't everything. we make WAY less per paycheck/month than we did when we lived in texas and we live just as comfortably. if you really want to move here, i think there is always a way to do it as long as you feel okay and safe doing it which ever way you decide. good luck!

Well I did move to Oahu without a job in March of 2002, but I had some savings (approx 65K) to get me through. It took me till November to get my job and that was through networking my Navy friends; although I was offered a position the same week with Hawaiian Electric too. You can do it, but be prepared, for a lot of applications and interviews (if you are fortunate). I'm moving back next month, but this time, I'll have employment, once was enough for me - and I'm not getting any younger either. When you're young some stresses don't feel quite as bad.
Good Luck to you!

In general, moving to HI without a hard job in hand is ill advised. The local economy is under stress, non-residents/newbies are at the bottom of the hire lists and life without local connections can be very difficult. If you do make the move, plan on a minimum of 6-10 months living expenses in hand (or more). The islands are indeed paradise, but they are not free.

So what, you fly in, bus it to da kine north shore, pitch one tent then surf all day! Shoots brah! go for it!!
Once you start learning pidgin' and start talking wit da locals, you might get yourself one job if you like.
You must be one of those rich kids, going to fly over, stay in da Hilton, party party at Dukes all day, then tree months later you try job hunting cause da credit card melted!
A-LO-HA !!!!!!
