Hawaii and school systems, questions...
Hi all. Well.. I have also though Hawaii would be a beautiful place to live. My husband is in the Coast Guard so Hawaii could possibly be one of the options. We have to move next summer, and we are trying to decide where we want to live. I have heard some not so good things about the school systems there, but Id like to get some more opinions on this. Also my son has autism so I would like to go somewhere we he can receive services, in school and privately. I really appreciate any info if anyone can help. Thanks!!
Jen
PS
Forgot to mention that the CG station is in honolulu

I do not have children in school but it is said for decades now that hawaii does not have a great school system. low scores and such. I do know there are some very caring teachers. the DOE is looking at some serious cut backs this year and the teachers are not happy about it at all. there is a website I haven't surfed it called hawaiimoms, not sure if it is about babies or what the age group is but I bet you could get info there. good luck

I graduated from public schools on Oahu, and has a whole, they're not very good. I'm not sure what might be available to your son as far as public schools go. However, there are a couple of private schools you might want to research: Loveland Academy Hawaii (located in the Makiki area of Honolulu), and Pacific Autism Center (located in the Kaka'ako area of Honolulu). Good Luck!

Jen - The answer to that depends on what you define as "affordable". Everyone has a different price point.
Are you looking specifically for private schools that focus on learning differences?

Well, I suppose around $4000-$5000 a year would be affordable.. It seems like most are more expensive though
And a private school that has a good special ed program and focuses on learning differences would be a plus...

Not on the Big Island - and private schools are less expensive here than on Oahu. It's more like $20,000+.
