employment for nurses
It's 6/20/09 and here in Chicago there are few nurses jobs. I've been out of work 8 wks. Is it the same for nurses in Hawai'i? The # of ads in popular websites is deceiving. I'm wondering how long it might be for me to move to Honolulu, Hilo or Maui. AND...how does one secure a job longdistance?

Demand for RN jobs depends on many factors, such as your own experience and skill level (e.g. new grad vs. advance practice), the financial stability of the hiring organization, the surrounding community's needs and socioeconomic profile. You also need to take into consideration that RN jobs in HI also tend to pay somewhat less than in many similar urban cities of comparable size/population, and of course the cost of living here is way higher.
If you're looking for a hospital-based RN job, bear in mind Hilo and Maui have only 1 major hospital each (Hilo Medical Ctr. and Maui Memorial) and the level of their care is fairly rural. Oahu has several large hospitals, clustered especially around urban Honolulu, and a few outlying ones. Although this link is fairly out of date (e.g. Leahi Hospital is a care home, not a hospital, and St. Francis-Liliha and SF West are now Hawaii Medical Center East & West) it gives you a place to start if you're looking for the names of the major hospitals on Oahu. Then you can track down their websites and look for their employment links.

Mahalo APT162, I am 60 y/o, am not looking for a hospital job, but hospice, home health or senior residence care. I have learned LomoLomi and Kahuna HaHa work. I'm much more drawn to Maui because my ancestors came from Lahaina and because of my interests in integrative med. Mahalo for the names of the facilities to track and contact. I'm sorry to hear that the pay is even less, considering the cost of living is so much higher, but that seems to be the case with most jobs, yes?
Are you in healthcare? Did you grow up there or are you a transplant too?

On Maui, a starting point might be to inquire through Maui Memorial or Kaiser re: home health, hospice and senior care job opportunities. I'm from and work on Oahu so I'm not up to date on out-of-hospital healthcare opportunities there, sorry.

Mahalo, I hope to contact an agency that serves the islands. They recently posted new jobs and maybe they'll give me the scoop all over the islands.
Do you have any recommendations on the best companies to use to move cars and a household? There's so many choices on line, who all say they're the best, of course!
I appreciate your help!

My recommendation would be that you use the "Search" feature at the top of each page to look for threads re: moving to HI and shipping companies to see what others have experienced and what advice they can offer.

I did a salary comparison on Career Builder. They said the comparison to my current salary in Chicago, would need to be $16,000 higher in Hawai'i to live the same. The salaries I saw on line at the Hawai'i Medical Center job line are only $5,000 higher. I see what you mean by poor Salary for the cost of living!

Sorry, I just noticed your response to my earlier question. I'll search as you suggest. Thanks for all your help. Maybe by the time I'm ready to move, I can write you and let you know, so we could meet. I have a cousin whose pretty well known there; Jan Dill, president of the PID Foundation. He's encouraging me to work at the Lunalilo Home, but they didn't respond to my resume, sent 6/12. I've been questioning things since then. I wouldn't blame them for hiring a nurse whole's living there already, needing a job. I just hope to get there soon.
take care.

look for jobs at the military installations. don't be fooled by the quoted salary. they pay an additional 25% non-taxable (federal) cost of living. i have been very fortunate and in 2 years have increased my salary by $20,000 here. i had a great job back on the mainland but i worked ALL the time.
i work 3 days a week now (12 hour shifts) and don't work as hard.

A local employment company named ALTRES (altres.com) staffs temporary, permanent and travel medical positions. Submit your resume to them and see if they contact you. Last time I talked to them they were pursuing out-of-state applicants in selected medical positions - especially RNs and CNAs.
