Ummm, many areas of the islands are surrounded by coral reefs -- you know, the things that make snorkeling interesting because of the ummm, coral, fish, other marine life, plants, etc. that make up a reef? I'm guessing what some people are calling "rocks" are coral, but there are rocks, too. Plenty of sand, no worries.

I agree with you hothulamaui. Hana has great hiking as does many areas in upcountry for the serious hikers.

Aloha! My favorite islands for the activities you mentioned are Kauai and Maui. I think they have the best beaches. The south and west sides of the islands tend to be drier and sunnier. Enjoy...

For least amount of rain - which would mean almost a zero chance - Waikoloa Beach area would be number one choice. It is basically a desert. Nice beaches are close (2 to 20 minutes, max) and 1.5 hours away is the volcano. Hiking galore! There are so many micro-climate areas on the BI (Big Island) it is mind-boggling.

We lived in Kona, so I would say according to your requirements, you would not like the beaches there, although at your age and activity level, the Big Island would be a terrific fit, however if all you are looking for are sandy beaches why did you decide on Hawaii, if I may ask.

Hawaii is so much more than beaches. You should give it a try, the magic lies in the culture including the local people, the valleys, the untouched hiking adventures, the art, the snorkeling, the kayaking, not to mention always a wonderful view of the ocean, with perfect weather almost year round.
All of the islands are beautiful and have beaches. You may like Maui. On Oahu there are several beaches with trucked in sand that your toes will adore. You could try "best hawaiian beaches" on google for a rating
