Hamakua is both a District of Hawaii Island and a way to describe the coast from Hilo to Waipio. The commute times vary based on the starting point. It could be 5 minutes or it could be 1 hour. Sortof like the commute time from the west side of Manhattan NYC to South Ferry. Are you starting on Canal Street (5 minutes) or Dyckman Street (1 hour).

What village/housing area are you commuting from? Figure 45 mph once you get to the road into town. It is posted 55 but generally for some reason you end up going less than that.
There is only one road, it is a two lane blacktop that goes through small housing areas which slow it down to 45 mph in spots. It is really scenic, though, so going slow is a plus instead of a minus.

Your best bet for specific info would probably be to go to Mapquest and plug in the University address and the address of places you are considering living. The drive times will be approximate, of course...but your question is still a bit too vague for us to give you anything more helpful.
To see what areas are encompassed by the general term "Hamakua", click here for a map that shows the tax map Zones--generally, "Hamakua coast" can refer to the upper part of South Hilo, North Hilo and Hamakua districts: http://www.clarkhawaii.com/maps/imag...ZonesREV10.pdf

Having driven from there today, be aware that the large stretches of road with 45mph and the many curves will slow one down. Plus, getting thru Hilo during "rush hour" will add a few extra minutes since NONE OF THE FREAKIN" TRAFFIC SIGNALS ARE TIMED FOR EFFICIENT TRAFFIC FLOW!
I wanted to get that out of my system...

It takes about an hour to get from Honokaa (42 mile marker) to Hilo. Providing the bridges aren't out or there aren't any landslides on the road. Laupahoehoe is about forty five minutes out from Hilo. There is no town/village or hamlet named "Hamakua".
Also be aware that many of the place names along the Hamakua coast are nothing more than a post office and a few houses. Just because it has a post office, some houses and a name does not mean it also has things like gas stations, stores, churches or anything else.
Perhaps a vacation rental for a week or two would allow you to look the area over before deciding where to live?

I should add that cell phone service (t-mobile and/or AT&T) wasn't much along most of the road!

I don't mind slower driving - I do hate sitting at one traffic light after another though. Hilo wouldn't have "traffic" if they did a better job at coordinating the signals. Plus, think of all the gas you waste.
