I just read on the Hawaii requirement gov site that due to cut backs they may not be as readily available to do inspections - don't know what that means?

At this point I also will be coming (crossing fingers) in December. I ended up being even more delayed because the vet in WA inserted the wrong brand micro chip in my dog. I didn't notice it had to be a specific brand of chip! Had to redue blood work on the 11th!!

When I get home in Sept will be calling to see what arrangments need to be scheduled in Kona - My dog isn't too heavy but he is tall so giant crate also. I am going to try to fly straight from Seattle to Kona - avoid the whole inter island exchange. United I know has direct flights but during the Christmas rush it maybe interesting! Good luck to you too! Maybe well end up on the same flight!!! haha

I am aware that I can fly direct to KOA the Dept of Ag is at this airport but the direct flight to KOA are few.
The flight from Newark to HNL sounds good but the ransfer flight to the BI are tight which carrier will take big dogs?

The saga continues !

Yes the saga sure does continue..for me too..the PetRelocation folks work to get the animals to the final destination, no matter what it takes..and what flight they can get the dogs on.
I believe that the DO Agriculture will look over the paperwork and release the dogs directly at HON airport. The problem is what to do with them if the flight does not leave immediately; this is where the relocator folks come in to make sure the animals are cared for if the connection is not made the same day..
my worries are :
1. my Danes are puppies; what happens if their titer level is not high enough after the required number of vaccines..I suppose we put off moving until and when that titer is where it needs to be..
2. my Weim is 6. he is glued to my hip. I need to make sure he is transported with the least stress possible.

When I read about transporting 5 Komondors, I smile, knowing I am not alone in this seemingly endless quest to move to those islands..

As I am waiting for my titer result - I was told by vet up here in Alaska that gets around 10 dogs a year ready to go and knows what he is talking about vrs the one in Seattle area. If the titer fails you should find out within 4 weeks of sample being taken -- then redo again. Good luck!

I guess transporting one dog isn't that bad!!! Can't think of trying to do three or 5 dogs!!! OMG that has got to be expensive!!!

Make sure that whom ever you use on Hawaii to deal with quarantine is Authorized to deal with quarantine. You can't just pick any pet relocation service and expect that Hawaii is going to release the animal to them when they show up. If the person acting on your behalf is not an authorized person under Hawaii's regulations, your animal will have to remain with quarantine until you personally show up to claim the animal.
Also make sure you understand that you are responsible for transporting the animals IN THEIR CRATES from quarantine to your next flight. Airline and airport personnel do not do this. If you have a large crate with a dog, you'll have to figure out how you are going to get from quarantine to the airline terminal. Animals are prohibited from being outside their crates on airport property.

If traveling with several animals, some inter-island carriers limit the number of animals on the aircarft and you may be forced to make two trips. This needs to be planned for.Make sure if you are doing a neighboring island release that you have obtainned from the vet who will do the inspections what their policies are. Some limit the hours they are availble. Some limit it to certain airlines. Don't assume that a neighboring island release is available like at Honolulu.

Always check with your airline if the pet travel portion is CONFIRMED and not just on a space available basis, or so long as nothing pops up. make sure if you are traveling to Hawaii with a stop someplace on the mainland and changing airlines, that your pet is changing with you. Not all airlines will transfer pets between airlines. This is very important if you are actually booking different flight segments individually instead of the entire trip as a single passage.

Of course, you can contact Jollydogs who is putting together a private pet charter from the mainland to Hawaii which lets your pet sit in the seat next to you.
Good luck everyone!

Not sure what Jollydogs is. Googled same and got nothing applicable?

I am also going to look into a flight from Sea-Tac and ship my car from there to? Now my brain really hurts....

Aloha,

I just got off the DOA web site and saw the notice it was to inform us of the new shorter hours 8:30 to 3:00 so if you need to do a connecting inter Island flight be advised so you dont show up at 4:00 and cant get released. This was just for HNL.

I found on the DOA site my dogs microchip pdf which was in the complete list of all warm blooded animals She passed no probs I am assuming with her present microchip. The file is AQS-microchip.pdf

I'm also thinking of starting a new thread for all dogs go to the BI and want to play. lol

Thanks everyone for their tips and advice. If I can find a United flight direct to Kona it sure would save me the inter-island hassle. I love the idea of renting a small plane. My husband is a pilot so that might actually work out if it is a real option. Does anyone know more about that? I am also waiting for he cattle moving people to get back to me about our horses. I suppose I'll ask if they can do dogs too.

Direct Release/Direct to Kona: I did talk to the Hawaiian Ag folks about the direct release at the airport which is also necessary to get a dog directly to Kona. It must be applied for at least 1 month in advance of your trip, so they said. I thought I read 10 days on the website. But if they say 1 month I'm going with that. It also requires a receiving vet on the BI. Not sure how to line that up.

Pet Handling Companies: What are the names of companies on Oahu that can receive your dog from quarentine and hold it or get it to it's next destination? I haven't seen any of those listed.

Giant Kennels: When I spoke to them Hawaiian Airliens said they have no plane between islands that can handle that size kennel, evening or not. Their mainland planes can however, but the cost is much higher than Northwest. I don't know what United charges yet. Also I know Alaska Airlines doesn't transport giant sized kennels. I can only hope mine actually fit in them. I haven't tried yet. The post about custom made kennels has me worried. My Koms are as large as the Great Dane we just lost to old age.

Good luck to all you other big dog movers.
