Default What are my chances of landing a health care job?

Hi,

I'm looking for opinions of people who actually lives in Hawaii. Being so far away, it's hard for me to gauge my empoyability there. There are at least twenty positions posted online for my field. At Maui Memorial Hospital, my job has been placed on the list for on-going recruitment until needs are met with a shortage bonus of almost $700/mo added to the salary.

I'm a respiratory therapist. I've worked in several different sized hospitals with children and adults. But then, I'm a mainlander!

Would I have a chance to be able to fill one of the positions? Particularly the one on Maui? Or would they most likely not consider me because I don't already live there?

Thanks for any info you can give me. It's been my dream since I was a kid to live on the islands and then happened to grow up and marry a guy that was born there!

~Miss~

Specialties give you a large advantage.
Get a throw-away cell phone and get an 808 area code. Use that phone for your job search. It really will help. If you can, take a trip out there and notify various HR departments, etc. that you will be on-island and would like to meet with them, in person. Don't tell them you are taking a vacation to the island. Stress that you are on a job search and looking at places to live.

Hi With your speciality you have a excellent chance of employment. Unfortunately I just moved back to the mainland. I worked at Maui Memorial as a Ultrasound tech. They interviewed me by phone and offered me the job a cou[le of week later. All my pre employment was done on the mainland. I loved working there, kind of a small tight knit community.

I was in the same boat. I am an RN. I applied for various jobs through Maui Memmorial website in Jan. I still have not even gotten a call.
I just came out by myself for 8 weeks to Oahu. I worked thru a registry 3 days a week, and flew to outer islands. I went to all hospitals. I scoped out where my family would live. We decided on Maui.
We all came out in July. I applied with a travel registry. I was working within 2 weeks. What got me the job was being here on island and licensed in Hawaii. If you can, apply as a travel RT. If its just you they will set you up on housing and car allowances. Then once working there as a traveler you can apply for a job. That seems to be how outsider work it. There is need there. But getting in from the mainland is hard. Once here you can put feelers out for if you want to move permanently here or not?

Thank you all for the advice! This is definately something that I would like to do so I will start making plans for a trip. I do wonder though, is it better if I apply online first and then go or just go and visit hospitals in person?

You definitely need to live here or an 808 to get a job here. Show your commitment by moving here and making a life here, and watch things change. BTW - there are TONS of health care jobs here...better here than in other places. Good luck!
