Parrots in Paradise
Aloha,
I'm curious how those of you who own parrots maintain them in such a tropical atmosphere. I left my Umbrella Cockatoo on the mainland when I moved a year ago. My concern is not in the actual care of the large birds but more concerned in regards to controlling rodents/pests from feeding etc. I know what a mess my 'Georgie' could make. Do you tend to house your Parrots inside or outside? I'd love some feed back about this. I have found a Catalina Macaw that has my name tattooed all over it.
Mahalo,
Koale

We have 4 parrots and I know several others who have parrots here. There is a little more problem w/ pests such as ants getting in the cage, but you clean it frequently. My 2 macaws are outside on a screened in covered back lanai, the 2 umbrella cockatoos are inside the house because they were bugging the neighbors. Do not buy a cage that has hollow tubing in the frame. Trust me on this one. If they are outdoors, mongoose can be a problem although I have never had a problem with them. My vet said that mongoose are not likely to attack a parrots as large as a macaw or cockatoo.

Up the street from us is a Blue and Gold Macaw named Merlin that lives in an outside aviary and seems to be doing just fine. As well a friend of ours has an African Grey that they keep out side as well.

We only have two small birds whose cages fit nicely in a spot in our kitchen window, but your post reminded me of a home I showed in Waikoloa Village a year or so ago. The owner had built a huge enclosure for his large bird on a corner of the back lanai of the house. It was in a shady spot and was screened from about 4ft off the floor up to the roof. The indoor/outdoor cat was sleeping just outside the enclosure when we were visiting. Can't get that out of my head--would love to imitate it one day!

We have a huge enclosure that my husband bought when he first was getting ready for our 4 parrots to arrive (I was still in Las Vegas). It's 1/2 X 1 inch mesh, sturdy wire that's about 6 feet high and more than that wide on one side----it's kind of a wedge shape almost. Has a door you can walk thru and a feed door, too. We set it outside under the trees and put several perches etc on it so they could have outside time.
then we got chickens LOL and it is now equipped with a row of 4 nest boxes!

Something to consider if you are planning to keep your birds outdoors is that they can be an easy target for theft. Sorry to be a downer, but as a bird owner, you know how expensive they are.
