Someone on here, very helpfully, suggested checking out Vacation Rental By Owner: vrbo.com. Since rentals are down, the suggestion was made that the owners of the condos are more than willing to do deals and possibly give a year's lease.

Obviously if the economy changes, it wouldn't look like such a great plan. But as long as the economy is doing what it's doing, does it sound like a plan to all of you already on Oahu?

We have a very mild mannered black Lab. He's only mild mannered because he's 10 in Dec. He was swinging from the chandeliers up to about 5 years ago! .

Please feel free to knock some sense into me if you think I'm being overly optimistic.

I'm not sure about other areas but I haven't seen many pet-friendly owners/buildings in Honolulu...

How about Oahu as a whole? If my husband worked in Honolulu, are there communities w/ condos relatively close to Honolulu?

Kaneohe, Kailua, Hawaii Kai, Aiea, Pearl City are all relatively close to Honolulu.

Try:

and

Honolulu is nothing but tall apartment and condominium buildings interspersed with a few office buildings here and there. There are loads of places to live in Honolulu itself or attached to it such as Makiki, Kakaako, Moiliili, etc.

I doubt you'll find anything pet friendly on VRBO, but I could be wrong. You'd be better off making a quick trip here to find a more permanent place, or leaving the pup with family until you're more permanently settled.

I lived in a pet friendly building in Makiki, and now live in one in Punchbowl. (Both in town, close to whatever you want, and very close to where you said your husband was applying in an earlier post... like walking distance with a dog-friendly park right there.) The Hawaii Humane Society maintains a list of pet-friendly buildings. See the downloadable files to the right on this page: Pets In Housing | Hawaiian Humane Society (http://www.hawaiianhumane.org/pets_housing.html - broken link). One caveat: you rent from the unit owner, not from the building. So it's rarely true that every unit in a pet-friendly building allows pets. It may be negotiable, though. We paid a slightly higher monthly rent than advertised and signed an agreement to pay for a thorough cleaning upon leaving at our first place.

When I moved here, I joined this list: PETS OK - Hawaii's Pet Friendly Rental Home and Apartment Finders. It's cheap, and you get lots of listings. I didn't end up finding our place there (a friend found it), but I did follow up on a bunch of places there.

Hawaii Kai can be pricey, and the commute to town can be tough, but there are lots of pet friendly buildings there.
