Default University of Hawaii at Manoa..?

I am going to be attending the University of Hawaii at Manoa next year but I had a few questions.

•What are the Dorms like?

•How about the showers in the dorms..I read they are community showers, but do they still have shower curtains and everything?

•Can you choose which residence hall you want to live at. I saw different ones on their site Residence Halls

•Is it a safe school?

As the parent of a college student, may I strongly suggest visiting the campus? There is nothing that answers those questions and relieves those anxieties quite like seeing the place firsthand. Call the Admissions office beforehand and ask if there is someone who can give you a tour. Often a current student can show you around and give you the lowdown on which dorms, programs, food services, etc. are the best.

Also, once you apply and are admitted, you will be given a ton of information about housing. A quick look at the website Student Housing Services reveals that you can request your preferred dorm, but like many things, the earlier you apply, the more likely it is that you will get your first preference.

If you can't visit for some reason, I would still write to the admissions office with your questions. They have lots of stuff they can send you, and maybe they can put you in touch with students who can answer questions.

When my son was applying for colleges, he received phone calls all the time from kids in his major asking if he had any questions.

Good luck.

UH Manoa also has a presence on Facebook University of Hawaii at Manoa's Notes | Facebook --looks like you could ask your questions there if answers are not forthcoming on this forum.

I'm a prof here and have never been to any of the dorms, so I can't answer with great authority. But I'm sure that the showers have individual stalls w/curtains or doors. Also, Frear Hall is the newest and nicest of the dorms, so you should make that one your top choice.

As for safety, Manoa is a very safe neighborhood. I frequently work at my office until 10pm, walk to the bus, and take the bus home. I have never been hassled or even felt worried. (My last job was in Los Angeles, so this is a big change for me!) There is a lot of petty theft. Don't leave your computer / cell phone / wallet unattended at the library. Be sure to lock your bike. Lots of people ride scooters and mopeds, and those are frequent targets of theft. But I've been here over a year now and don't recall hearing of any really major campus crime.

And I'll just second the suggestion to visit if you can!
