I believe that there is currently a waiting list for additional Section8 housing in Hawaii. Furthermore, you must first establish residency before being allowed to get on the waiting list. Residency is six months plus you have to meet some additional guidelines to be able to prove your status.

Yes, mdand3boys is right and some waiting lists (depending on which county you're looking to live in) are permanantly closed till further notice, except recently there have been some changes due to additional funds. However, since you're already on section 8 you can transfer your voucher, but only if you're not already in a lease where you currently reside. You'll need to contact the housing office where you received your voucher and let your case worker know that you want to move either before or at your next recertification. But I strongly advise that you do all the research you can before you go. I don't know your sitauation, though there are issues with medicaid and how many doctors will accept it as well as mental health services being few and far between depending on which county you'll being living in.

I know that they are opening (or have opened) new low income apartments in Kapaa. If you look in the Garden Island, they frequently have ads for the apartments in Koloa and Lihue, too.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to have the son visit you than to move to Kauai? You already have support systems in place for where you are and you'd lose those in relocating.

If you read the classified in the Garden Island newspaper (Kauai) most adds will say something to the effect that they won't rent to anyone on section 8 housing.

If your son lives on Kauai why isn't he helping you look for affordable housing?
