Default Hilo mattress stores

After lurking here for a year, am finally moving to Leilani Estates in less than a month; small shipment of furniture is being picked up tomorrow, car goes shortly thereafter. Looked at furniture stores while on two trips this summer (sales kept falling through...another story) but had planned on shipping the bed so never priced/searched for one. Now, due to cutting back on shipment size (limited to two "lift vans") must buy a bed, hopefully the day after arriving. Don't want to waste $ staying more than a night or two in a hotel with an empty house sitting there. Trying to find beds on-line and timing the shipping to arrive at the right time is futile, buying before and shipping it myself is exorbitant ($400 per 100# UPS) and same timing problems. There appears to be only one mattress store in Hilo? Any other places or is the first day spent driving to Kailua Kona?

May I suggest, as an intermediate step, an Aerobed (or something similar) You can get one for less than $100, it's compact to carry, and you can use it as a guest bed once you have your regular bed in place. It worked for me. I brought mine with me in my luggage.

There is only one "Discount Mattress Store" in Hilo, the one on Kanoelehua. There is also a furniture store on Keawe (a block mauka of the Burger King, sorry, I'm blanking on the name); they have mattresses/box springs. There is also a used furniture store on Maka`ala that sells new mattresses/box springs.

Even if you buy one on the day you arrive, don't count on it being in stock. We discovered this when we moved there; having been used to mainland mattress stores ("Buy by 2pm, delivered by 5pm") we got an introduction to "Hawai`i time" when the salesperson said the bed was in the warehouse in Honolulu and would likely "make next Friday's barge, or the one after that. But, no worries brah, it will come."

There's also Costco. It is on the other side of the island, though, so you would have to figure out how to get it to your house. At least at Costco what you see is what you get.

Congratulations on your move!

You can buy a fold up futon at many of the grocery stores as well as other places. They aren't expensive and are good when you have lots of guests arrive. It will give you a temporary fix.

Hey, thanks for the help. Been busy getting the shipment off and car ready to go Monday, but found a super helpful mattress store in Hilo. After visiting the company's store here, have ordered a bed in Hilo, over the phone. Thanks again.

The home place on maka'ala is great. Dave (the owner) is super kind and honors Kama aina rates.
