I lived in Hawaii for the shortest 4 years of my life! I love Hawaii!!! I am a "haole" and I worked at Pet Discount warehouse and never had a problem with the locals! I lived in Ewa Beach.I have 3 children, the youngest was born in Hawaii, the middle was born in NC but his father (my ex husband) is a local my son is half & half so he fit right is alway.(My oldest son is not my "birth" child, he is my 2nd husband oldest child)

My story in short mode~~~ my EX moved to the mainland (he was born and raised in HI), we meet got married had a child.when we split he back to HI.Met my second husband, moved to HI, had another baby, moved back to mainland years later)

I miss Hawaii so much and want to move back! My son gets to go every summer (soooo NOT fair LOL!!!)

I did notice the locals do not like the military expect for the Coast Guard. (We are Coasties ourself) since I worked with the locals, I am friends with a lot of them and one day we got on this same subject and I was told this by many of them. BTW~~~ I am one of hoales in the Pet discount commercial.I'm the one holding/kissing the gray teil at the end of one of commercials. (blonde hair, green shirt) my ex told me the commercial is still running??

I see that many of these posts are old and maybe no one will read this - but I am hoping for some advise. I lived on Maui for 2 years - I had a really hard time for the first 6 months - I could not find work and had many incidents that could be interpreted as racial - but after I found my way and made friends I could not have been happier - my son loved it at first but experienced a reat deal of violence agianst him for being caucasion he went to high school and ended up moving away to be with his dad - that broke my heart - my daughter did middle school and loved it until her brother left and then was sad - but still okay - when I deceided to go back mainland to help my son get through his schooling as it just wasnt working with dad - everyone my daughter knew turned on her and she left in tears feeling like she had no friends - months later all of her island friends are writing her sad that they were hurtful and said it was because she was moving and they didnt want to hurt -- she still has mixed feelings -- when we left my frineds cried and so did I - I talk more to them more than I do friends I grew up with and they really care for me - I made the kind of friends on Maui one can ony dream of having and I miss them and left my heart there. I am trying to return maybe to Kauai -- I have looked and Kauai looks less touristy and I think tourists while they are valued for economic reasons are part of the problem -- I noticed that many come and ohh and ahh but do not take care to give proper respect - many litter and run amok as if the islands are not home to many many people - Yes I agree that often locals get preference from employers and police and wrong or right - imagine living somewhere an investing in people to make your home function and everyday there is a new person on staff or someone leaving and uprooting - it is a very hard way to live and hard to attach to people as many do not stay and it hurts to say goodbye. In addition, as far as being similiar to raciam on the mainland - good point - my children are hapa -- (mixed) some are very light others much browner and we have exprienced every type of racism you can imagine here were we grew up - you cannever be everything everyone wants and if you go somewhere afraid that you will be judged you are worrying to much about what others think and need to worry more about what God thinks -for he should be your all and if you surround yourelf by others who think this way - you will be okay I too am very human and fail often as are we all but I am trying Best wishes

No, I don't think there's a lot of haole hate in Hawaii. I think it all depends on your attitude. I also think a lot of people hear about it before moving to Hawaii so they go looking for it and when they find it, they exaggerate. JMO.

Just pulled onto Kihei Road, stopped in front of the ABC store to let a guy make a left hand turn onto the road, gotta haole tourist behind me, honking his horn and going lolo. I don't care too much for haoles myself, and I'm haole, been here 32 years, every year on Maui now seems to get worse. Tourists on the 3 island 7 day plan, you can just see it, "Come on, we've gotta get to Lahaina for lunch, then Iao Valley, out to Hana, and up to the crater, pass that jerk". I'm seriously considering relocating, because Maui aint Maui anymore, kind of a pity. Not kind of a pity, but an outright shame.

GirlinAZ will become famous soon enough
They must have come from Scottsdale. Today there was an elderly lady honking while all lanes were moving. She just didn't like how slowly the person in front of her, from Canada was driving, (45) passed her, climbed up another person's ass and honked at them too. Imagine someone tailgating you and honking while doing it. She wasn't doing 60 (on a street, not a freeway) so she was pissed. Now, imagine the people that are younger than granny and you can get an idea of why I have been rear ended here about 5 times, and t boned when someone decided a red light was optional, rather than mandatory. People are so rude here and I know they all go to Maui, so sorry about that. Imagine being around ONLY them though, like me. (silver lining)

I've been reading alot about this "new" lashing out at haole's and they are saying it is going to get worse.
Thanks!
I wouldn't worry about it. There is racism EVERYWHERE!!!! I moved to the mainland when I was 10 and I saw MUCH more racial hate here in Ohio towards people of different ethnicities. I am hapa-haole and it is always hard to explain to people "what" I am. I just say that I'm Filipino and leave the White out, because they don't really care about the White part, they only want to know what's different about me.

Yeah theres racism everywhere. My neighbor is white and his wife is hawaiian. I am samoan and i looooove white women. The only problem I ever had with a caucasion was when I was taken onto a military base and the white men act like they are better than me and need to be served with respect.. I just found that kinda offensive. Also a ton of white men i met always yapping about how they HATE hawaii.. I dunno. Im not a real violent person but inside it bugged me!

Im no racist i talk story and make friends with any color. But i do think there are some who are bitter inside...ive seen it. I was just telling in another post that i had a white friend who got mobbed. Also one of my mexicans (looked white) friends got mobbed on his way home. This has never happened to any of my local or black friends.... But do know that there are many locals who are perfectly fine with caucasions and no trouble there. Dont live in fear...just know it *could* happen. but dont worry about it til youre givin reason to.

I think the big thing with the military "hating Hawaii" is from just not being where they want to be. My Dad was at Wahiawa during WWII and always said how he hated it, but he brought it up repeatedly over the years and always talked about it with a glazed look like he really missed it. His stories of his life here brought me here to live.
