Waianaegirl is on a distinguished road
Waianae, Oakland what's the difference? I lived in Waianae for 6 years. Hated it, but some people that live there now, like it enough. But there is that stereotype for a reason. Waianae, IMO, is the hood! But that was just my personal experience.

I would consider Kunia, Ewa and Kapolei; while they are farther away from town there are some lovely and affordable places that are safe and friendly with a high Military population (many Mainlanders).

As with everywhere there are those that will take advantage of you just as there are those who are open, welcoming and friendly. It is up to you to divine who is trustworthy and who is not (most adults do have a 'radar'). Use your common sense and all will be well. There are so many friendly people here but there are those who are no so nice so it is up to you to choose wisely (there are PLENTY of people from the Mainland White and Black who will take advantage of a person just a quickly as a 'local' person). Users and dangerous people are NOT restricted to certain races- these are equal opportunity bad traits!!!

Try to find a fully furnished long term vacation rental. This allows you to tour the areas and actually get to know the neighborhoods before choosing a place to live. Good luck with your move.
