It has been amazing along the shores of my little Alaskan island for the past month. The humpback whales have been getting ready for their long journey to spend the winter with you. Bubble feeding, thrashing and breeching completely out of the water all day and night, making noises I can only describe as so big you feel it more than hear it. The biggest sound I've heard a living thing make, it's awesome in the dark! We all finally decided there are 24 humpbacks in the group. And scores of Stellar sealions along the fringes bellowing and thrashing about playing with their food while thousands of seabirds circle and dive between them.
So anyway, all the local fishermen took their gear out of the water as soon as they started showing up this year. Hoping this won't happen again:
They left two days ago, I wonder if anyone could let me know when/if they show up over there. They are obviously a family so I'd bet they'll be together when they show up. It'd be neat to know how long it takes.

I saw spouting, breaching and tail slapping yesterday on the west side of Kauai. I'm guessing 6 or so whales including a juvenile or 2.

On Big Island they were spotted recently at Kehena and one other park! Don't know when they showed up on the north side. Last year they didn't show on the east side until January, or at least that I saw and heard. Maui had the first show in October. The sound they make at night is incredible. Last year one did it on the cliffs by the house- bouncing the trumpet off the cliffs for 30 minutes. Amazing.

I saw whales on Wednesday, just off of Diamond Head. I was with my husband and actually got some good pictures! Better than I did when we went on a whale watching cruise!

It makes me sick when this happens. Even tho our fishermen voluntarily took their gear out of the water when they showed up en-force this year, nothing says they have to and that sure doesn't mean there isn't tons of gear along their path. There are so many hazards for these awesome creatures. Still a couple stragglers here, one was jumping out front of my cabin yesterday. We had a few stay all winter last year.

It sounds like you live in a wonderful location, minus the ice, snow, cold, etc...lol
