Kilauea's been erupting continuously since January 3, 1983 so it's not exactly "breaking news." However, if Hualalai suddenly erupted again after 206 years of dormancy, there could be some problems.
Here's a link to the current status of the Kilauea eruption...

Such a matter of fact thing on the Big Island that we found out about the new "action" on CNN, not our local news or paper!

True (I saw it on FOX ), but the VOG has really been bad this time around. It usually doesn't affect me but I thought I was going to die a few days ago!! LOL
Thankfully the trades are back!

Is VOG a big health issue for those of us who are not asthmatic? I am moving there in August and very curious after reading this thread. Thx!

It depends on where you live. It seems Kona and the southern end of the Big Island get it the worst. I was in Hilo today, and it was "voggy" there too though. A lot depends on the trade winds. When they are blowing, it's a lot clearer.
Sometimes people are affected by the Vog...sinus issues and headaches. It doesn't seem to bother some though. There is an over abundance of children with asthma here, but it may be due to other problems such as mold too.
In any case, when the Vog is heavy and there are no trades blowing, you can certainly bet on a gorgeous, hazy sunset. The Vog is part of the island culture here now....I wonder what this place would look like without it?

It's a mixture of hydrogen sulfide and other gasses put out in the smoke of the volcano, several tons of it a day. Similar to smog.

Was driving back from a job in Napili a few years back, we had to close the job down because the trades were really gusting, to dangerous for carpenters doing framing. I'm heading south, get just south of Olowalu, and can see something way off on the water. It's the Big Island!!!!! I never realized you could see it from the west side of Maui. The trades had cleared the sky of any vog, and there it was!!!
Haleakala is kind of overdue for a bit of a Pele fit, but, as long as Kilauea keeps chuggin along, I think we'll be ok, after all, all that plumbing way down below must hook up at some point!!!!
Aloha and okolemaluna
