I refuse to pay $11,000-14,000 a year for finger painting and story time. I think it's worth it starting around 3rd-5th grade, but for Kindergarten? Come on.

I went to Iolani (all boys at the time - lower school) and Waldorf (elementary) was weird.. the curriculum was VERY different than regular schools... very "holistic" approach to learning. Not bad though...

my sister went to La pietra.. I remember the student population at her school being VERY small.. I would rather have gone to public schools... But I was also a very shy kid and didn't know how to make friends easily.. It was difficult for me.

Kindergarten isn't about just finger painting and story time anymore. It is about arithmetic, typing, reading, writing book reports, giving presentations and computer labs. Times have changed and we learned kids can learn a lot more at a much younger age. I think even preschool kids are ready and eager to learn.

Default Where do we find good public schools in Oahu?

Aloha,

We want to move to Oahu but need to find out first where the best middle and high schools are because we have kids in that age group . We want to explore public schools first before considering private school because of its cost. We love the windward side but have heard that there is no good schools there (except for elementary schools). Manoa Valley/St. Louis Ridge would be our 2nd choice if there are better schools there. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Mahalo,

Jessica

Typically the "better" public schools are on the East side of Oahu (Hawaii Kai, Kahala areas). Moanalua H.S. is also a good school, located in the Salt Lake area.

Thank you ALL so much for your feedbacks. How about PUBLIC middle & high schools? We would move to the area where good schools are even if it's not our top choice of neighborhood.

Mahalo,
Jessica

Look no further than Kaimuki, a neighborhood in East Honolulu close to
St. Louis Heights, Waialae, Kahala and Kapahulu. Waialae Elementary is quite good and it's a chartered public school, Kaimuki Intermediate ranks quite high and finally Kalani High School though not great is certainly a better and safer option compared to some of the other public High schools.

Keep in mind in order for your kids to go to all three of these schools you would have be living in a specific area of Kaimuki roughly: Harding Ave. (north or Mauka, Diamond Head Road (south or makai), 12th Ave. (west or ewa) and Luawai St. (east).
