As for schools to avoid there are many unfortunately. These IMHO are the worse.

Intermediate (middle) schools to avoid: Waipahu, Dole, Kalakaua, Wahiawa

High schools: Farrington, Waipahu, Nanakuli and maybe even Kaimuki of late.

Others may disagree with me but this is from personal experience. I think Waipahu has some of the roughest schools, lots of fights and mob action going on, even the wahine fight a lot too. I know this because I lived there for some time and it was not uncommon to have large fights ending up on my block. I lived one block away from Waipahu Intermediate.

Thank you EVERYONE so much for the recommendations. Do you have any opinions about the neighborhoods in and around Koko Head and the schools there? THANKS AGAIN!

to be fair, all public schools in hawaii rank near the bottom in the entire U.S....ALL of them. The only place I would consider sending ym children is Punahou, Iolani or some other ridiculously expensive pribate school. TRUST ME, the schools here are a joke. That is exactly why after 18 years of living here, and now that I have children, I am moving to a secret undisclosed city on the mainland where my children will actually have to learn something. I know MANY kids who graduate public school here and they are basically at a 5th grade level when compared to most European countries, and definately Japanese schools... There are no better schools than in Japan..

The quality of the schools in Austin, Texas aren't a big secret. Good luck with your move.

Just to let you know about public schools. Its normal for kids to go to schools where they live. Going to schools in another district may be a problem. Private schools should not be a problem as long as you can pay the tuition.

I found this link today with rankings for best high schools in U.S. listed by state or by awards. There are 5 middle/high schools in Honolulu that received Bronze award. Although it's the lowest of the 3 awards, it's still in the top of the ranking pyramids.

Let me know what you think.
