We shipped our dogs to HI via continental airlines quick pac from houston. I thought that was a little too far for them , so when we moved home we used the same airline but flew them to CA and then drove from CA to TX with them. They are not with the luggage on Continental. It is a sepperate area, pressurized and climate controlled. They will be fine

True the compartment is climate controlled and pressurized, but there is also luggage or cargo in their too usually. I worked for an airline for many years and our particular type of aircraft had two cargo bins with the forward one being the pressurized one that animals can travel in, that being said, I would NEVER ship my dogs on a commercial carrier! It's dark, it's scarey, and there have been many cases (or close calls) of pets being loaded in the wrong bin due to inexperienced workers or whatever, and the pet will absolutely die in a very short time. Also, if by some freak thing something starts on fire in the bin, the chemical used to supress it will kill any living thing in there. I would definitely check into a strictly cargo carrier like FedEx or whatever and see how the plane is set up, I think everything on cargo planes is on the same level so there's not a seperate bin that divides the cargo/pets/crew etc. It seems like you are really dedicated to your pets, and I have a lot of respect for that (I worked for a humane society and now a vet) and you can not believe the number of people who just abandon their pets or surrender them because they are moving or even for no reason at all.
So good luck to you and your pooches!

I found an Australian Cruise line but after calling I found out the dogs were not allowed off the ship and it is a manditory round trip. So that was out.
This is a huge issue for me and if I can't find an alternative then I will have to just wait to move until they are no longer here
Thanks for any info.

Did you ever find a safe way to ship your animals to Hawaii? We are thinking about moving there as well and we have 10 large dogs, St. Bernards and NewFoundlands, and 1 cat. Like you, there is no way Iwill put them in a cargo area alone. I looked into a shipping cargo that allows passengers, but no pets. Can you give me any advice? I have already checked into the no quarentine. Thanks

While Fedex does ship horses, they do NOT ship domestic animals (dogs, cats, etc)....from their website:
"Acceptable shipments include but are not limited to horses (from gateway to gateway locations only). Household pets, such as domestic cats and dogs, are not accepted. "

Shipping dogs to Hawaii
Leilani,
We are trying to get a charter together thru Dog Travel Company. We are looking at the end of the summer. If that works for you then go to the site and add a post to the forum for Hawaii. This would be a charter plane where you dog(s) would be on the plane with you as a passenger. The more people/pets we get together, the better and lower price.

I have two Boston Terriers that I am trying to move to Hawaii with me. I have all the paperwork for the quarantine straight but my problem is getting them there on a plane. The Airlines are telling me because of their breed, they wont be able to travel if the temp is over 70 degrees in Hawaii. Is there a way to work around this?

The airlines make their own rules and there isn't much way to work around them. The 70 degree seems a bit low so going during winter/early spring would be about the only time of year you could go. It seems to me, the airlines really don't want to carry animals.
You could look for a cruise ship that starts on the mainland and goes to Hawaii, otherwise there is a charter airline somewhere that is ungawdly expensive that will let them be in the cabin.

What airline are you trying to fly them on? AA has rules about temp, but they're much more realistic. They won't fly if the temp is below 45 or above 85 at either destination.
I did a ton of research and couldn't find an airline that would allow my dogs (both 30lbs) in the cabin. I read somewhere that it was law that animals going into the state had to be in cargo, but I don't know how accurate that was, and I can't find that site again (of course!) It's scary, but I know a ton of people here that have flown their dogs over with no problems. Our vet said very specifically NOT to sedate them, but Benedryl was okay. Obviously, talk to your vet about it.
Here is all the info you need about the quarantine laws:
