The Superferry's not coming to the Big Island until 2009. Unfortunately, even then, it's only going to Kawaihae, not Hilo, so I never got that excited over it.
For someone living on the Hilo side of the Big Island, it would take 2-3 hours to drive to Kawaihae to board the Superferry, followed by a 4 1/4 hour voyage just to get to Honolulu. In that same span of time, one could fly from Hilo to Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, or Las Vegas.

Well, the traffic problems already exist, and the arrival of flights into the airport here, unloading of hundreds of passengers and the picking up of hundreds of rental cars creates problems of it's own, just in a slightly different location. Car rental companies are probably not too happy with the superferry either, but it's an idea that is way long overdue.

Thom, your mentality is just the thing that will take our island lifestyle forever. Cause you want a cheap ride at the cost of environment, Hawaiian lifestyle and self sustainability. The people will not say, "come and take our fish, waves, beaches, roads, parks.." Moderator cut: personal attack deleted Have you ever thought to ask people what they think? Seems to me like you are the person who creates problems for others and then blames someone else. It's interesting that the superferry has been met with such opposition not only from people but also mother nature. It's so great that people get sick on the horrible ferry. Those families that got stranded on Maui with no help from the superferry officials, not even a number to contact a real person to explain to them the question that the superferry has avoided. What should they do if they are stranded? Suck wind and don't contact us.... that is what you are supporting.

good, so stay home so you don't have to spread your pilau throughout the islands. Kawaihae stands to lose a beach of which precious resources are gathered by Native Hawaiians all for your cheap ride. A charter school stands to lose a classroom for the superferry. All for your cheap ride.

The longer you visit some place and you have your own car with you, the more you'll potentially save by not renting a car while there. I look forward to this addition and being able to see the other islands without the stress of renting a car and being crammed into a turboprop to see all that Hawaii has to offer!

It's not as expensive unless your car and family gets stranded and stuck on another island and being the the HSF officials won't lift one finger to help you, you will end up spending more money.

aloha, momi!
was wondering if you were speaking from experience? or, do you know of someone who had that experience? just asking because the reports that hear on the local news channels say that the passengers are being compensated.

Momi,
I'm just stating an opinion, no need get all nua already. In retrospect, and giving as to how the ferry has done thus far, I doubt if they will make it. I've taken the ferry from Lahaina to Molokai plenty of times, nothing like seeing a few tourists turning various shades of green, and then, well, heading for the railing as you hit the open swell. I don't get seasick myself, but once one person does, it seems to spread like lolo. Doesn't look like the hull design of the ferry is suitable for the large swells you get mid channel between Oahu and Molokai. The idea of being on board a ship for over 3 hours with people turning green is not my idea of a good time. Perhaps it was ill-concieved from the get go, SeaFlight sure didn't last long. I felt the benefit with the ferry would be that you could travel, interisland, WITH your car, and family, drive off, do your visiting and shopping, spend time with family, then head back home. As far as the enviornment is concerned, Matson container ships and cruise liners are much larger, and travel at a similar speed. You going to get rid of them too? And just as an aside, I believe KGMB did a survey, course they could have asked 10 people, I don't know, but over 70% asked were in favor of the ferry, go figure???? And Momi, if you are going to quote me regarding the ferry, please be kupo'no and quote all my postings in relation to the matter, not just one. Only fair, yea?????
Anyways Momi, ho'omanawanui and GO WARRIORS!!!!!!!

Sorry if this is dumb question from a mainlander, but we just got back from Kona and I was wondering why the hate for the SuperFerry?
It looks good from an outsider's perspective that loves the Big Island.

it's all about the "environment" or so they say. a situation that made things worse was the STEALING of truckloads of rocks from maui.

as long as you are not those little " green" men from outerspace, it's okay to turn " green" when you are supporting UH and the WARRIORS. now that would most definitely be a good time especially if you were in LA for the sugar bowl. black and white would be okay, too. no hurling allowed. unless of course, you ho'okina i ka inu (drink excessively).
lol. mai ho'okaumaha (don't worry) ain't no big ting bruddah! "let the good times roll!" as long there is an ample supply of ahi, a hauoli makahiki hou (happy new year) will be had!!!! and, no thank you. scorpion poke or chocolate dipped ones are not to my liking. what a rip-off at $65 two sixty per lb.
GO WARRIORS!!!!

well, here's a letter to the editor (honolulu star bulletin today):
"i can't believe how high and dry the superferry has left us. i have been stranded on maui for three days. they say that the superferry officials are contacting people about cancellations. i have yet to be contacted once by any superferry officials.
i finally had to purchase a round-trip airline ticket just to get back to o'ahu, leaving my truck and belongings in maui. i'm out an extra $438 because of hotel and airfare. i can't even express how very disappointed with the lack of accommodations and communications the superferry has shown."
