Hello everyone. So I've been reading a lot of threads, having to do with people wanting to move to Hawaii or they are thinking about moving. My question is, what makes YOU want to do that? I have also read many different threads about people moving to Hawaii for a few years or so and then leaving back to the mainland because they found out that Hawaii isn't what they expected. Another question, what are YOUR expectations? Besides the job, school, family, and however many times you have visited - What is it about Hawaii that makes you want to move there?

Being a Kapolei/Nanakuli born and raised native, I see many people disappointed when they do make that move to Hawaii. I mean let's face it, paradise is not really "paradise" like most people think. Every city, town, or state has its bad side that deals with drugs or alcohol. The other day I was watching CNN when the tsunami warnings were going off. There was a lady who was on Oahu or Kauai and she said that she had been there about 6 times before and knows her way around the island. Bring a local, not sure if other locals feel the same way, but who is she to say that she knows the island? I'm not trying to be rude but I'm trying to prove a point. Just because you visit so many times, doesn't give you the right ya know?

Anyway, I want to know anybody's thoughts on this. Just curious to see how other people feel as well.

Many go on a vacation there and just fall in love with it, but don't realize that living in HI and vacationing there are completely different things. These are most likely the people that move back 6 months later. They think "paradise," which it most definitely is, but living in paradise has its own problems, and it's not a vacation all the time.
What draws me there is just the lifestyle. Everyone is friendly (well, most everyone as long as you treat them with respect, they will respect you) and it's just a very laid back environment for the most part, i guess a lot of sections of oahu are an exception. Not to mention the scenery is 2nd to none, and the weather is near perfect year around. Yes, they get tropical storms and the occasional tsunami. I would say the main thing though is the aloha spirit, and the lifestyle, i love the people, and the culture.

Hello wikiwikirunner! I agree with you, the lifestyle is great! I would never trade it for anything else. Going back to the whole "paradise" thing, that's exactly it. People don't do the research before moving and later on they are disappointed. You are correct again: vacation and living in Hawaii are two different things. You see one side of the island when you are there for a few weeks or so but even if you travel there many times every year, there is also another side that people do not see. Weather, beaches, people, food, and everything else is great! I love my home!

Hi ARodrigues88 -- the second "sticky" question at the top of the page has a lot of great discussions about this topic. We sort of beat this one to death every couple of months. You might find some of the links interesting. This link may work: Hawaii : City by City / Island by Island & Answers to Your Relocation Questions

Have fun!

Hey Cowgirl! Thanks for that link. I honestly didn't see this thread before I wrote what I did. Very interesting. I'll keep reading it!

one example of what we both mentioned:
Been here a year, moving back to the mainland in a month, can't wait

Hawaii is a wonderful place. There are lots of things to do, as long as you do the research and find some good places. Just because you cannot drive into another state or whatever doesn't mean you are limited to certain things...

I've never been to Hawaii and never thought about living there, UNTIL a few years ago I started watching Magnum PI in the mornings before class. It actually made me nostalgic for my country of origin, Trinidad. I didn't plan to move to Hawaii, but I did think it would be a nice place to live.

Back around March last year I was on unpaid leave from work because we had a big slowdown, and looking through a lot of jobs... I found a job at County of Maui and applied. Then in December I heard back from them. Now as long as I pass my physical and I'll have a job on Maui.

I don't have the same concept of "paradise" as the folks who go as tourists. I've never even been on a vacation-- that whole scene has never been part of my life.

Paradise to me will be daily life. Like walking to work every day enjoying the fresh air, getting to eat the same fruits I grew up on in the Caribbean, going to the beach without it being a big deal, driving around the island on a weekend just to see stuff, etc.
